From Athlete to Coach: A Personal Evolution

The journey began for our Head of Triathlon as a student at Leeds Becket University, pursuing both a degree in Sports and Exercise Science and a passion for triathlon as an athlete. However, the path took an interesting turn as the focus shifted from competing to coaching. Bradley’s transition happened in the fourth year of university, marking the start of a coaching career that has touched various levels and age groups, including junior, senior, private age group and elite one to one coaching.

What stands out for Bradley is the personal growth and development within the coaching journey. Despite being relatively young, the commitment to continuous learning and the wealth of knowledge within the coaching team around him, contribute to ongoing improvement. The most cherished aspect for him is the day-to-day interaction with athletes, witnessing their dedication and the rewards reaped from their sacrifices in the sport.

For Bradley, the essence of coaching lies in positively contributing to someone's growth, development, or experience within the time spent together. It's a philosophy centred on creating a positive environment where athletes can enjoy their training and racing, ensuring that the job is done properly.

While no single moment stands out, the Head of Triathlon emphasises the importance of creating a positive environment. The true reward comes from traveling to races and witnessing coached athletes perform on national and international stages—a gratifying experience for both coach and athlete.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Triathlon at Leeds Beckett/University of Leeds

Triathlon in Leeds has a rich history of producing exceptional athletes and coaches. The vision for the future revolves around continual evolution and growth, aspiring to be the greatest endurance environment on the planet. The emphasis is on maintaining and building upon the program's success year after year, contributing to the legacy of world-class triathletes emerging from Leeds.

Looking forward, Bradley expresses excitement about the winter training season. The focus is on athletes putting in the hard work, gearing up for the upcoming race season in spring. The goal is to see athletes progress and perform to the best of their abilities, contributing to the ongoing success of the Leeds Triathlon program.

Bradley embodies a passion for coaching, a commitment to positive impact, and a vision for continual growth. As the triathlon journey unfolds, the Leeds Triathlon Performance Centre remains a hub of dedication, development, and determination, shaping the next generation of elite triathletes.
