We experience things everyday, more so when we move to a different country. My time in the UK has been short so far, about 5-6 months, but I have learnt so much and seen various things. This is an account of a few surprising aspects I have found.

The ease of travelling

I am in absolute awe of how everyone here, most people at least, are always polite and it is as though emails have come to life. This form of societal interaction builds boundaries and encourages people to practice patience and cordiality.

The country I am from, India, is very crowded, so it is difficult to follow lane discipline. Whereas the lane discipline here is followed with such ease.
Traffic moves smoothly. Seems unreal, nonetheless, I have come to terms with the fact that you can reach destinations within the city in 15 minutes and not expect a minimum estimate of 30-45 minutes.

The diversity is endless

Although, I expected a different kind of student city, Leeds is far better. It has people from various backgrounds, and it cannot be stereotyped. Somehow, we are all living harmoniously. Finding your niche guy of friends may take some time, but worth the little adventure and wait.

And the endless number of convenience stores with their plethora of food available. Magnificent. There is so much to choose from, that is the dilemma now.

Speaking of food, I have had some of the best sushi and boba tea here in Leeds. Would definitely recommend these places and everyone would find something they like. Some of my favourites are Senbon Sakura, The Ivy Asia, Gong Cha, Boba@24 and Hama Korean BBQ buffet.

Welcomed into life at LBU and Leeds

The library facilities provided by Leeds Beckett University and The Leeds Central Library are amazing. As a bookworm this is my dream come true. LBU has a 24/7 library access (best thing ever) with everything you would need to study, relax, research, print, etc. I have spent so much time here and the books available have greatly helped me study and produce my assessments. And The Leeds Central Library has innumerable old books with its antique aesthetic, it is not farfetched to say that I walk into a massive wardrobe of books every other day.

LBU’s welcome fair for freshers is wholesome and welcoming. Several companies, restaurants, agencies, and university clubs offer students a portfolio of what can be expected during our student life here, work opportunities, how we can experience more things and broaden our perspectives. This event impartially opens up the city/country to its students. I think it is the most beneficial event. I made a lot of acquaintances and friends; true to its intent, I could find what prospects my career holds and how I should navigate myself towards it.

Apart from the freshers fair or within in, there is also a career fair. Different companies are showcased, and we are encouraged to talk and apply to the companies we are interested in.

The support for international students

The Global Village team are invested in making students’ lives better and happier. Adding that extra flair that we need. The long walks and bus rides to a good number of places at very affordable rates. Grateful for the travelling initiative offered by them.

Hands down, the best one-day trips I have been to in the UK. I went to York, Ambleside, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. As a Potterhead and goth at heart I was brimming with happiness and overjoyed.

These experiences are right outside my door and yours.  Surely grab as many opportunities as you can. I am looking forward to more things every day; trying to experience as many wonderful things as I can.
