What I have learned so far as an international student

Hiya! It’s Annie here. First of all, welcome to Leeds Beckett University!

It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since I moved to the UK to start this journey as an international student in Leeds. It’s been full of challenges, but also amazing memories and achievements. I want to share what I’ve learned so far—not just academically, but about myself and life in the UK.

As a second-year student studying Digital Marketing at LBU, I’ve had quite an adventure. I still remember my first days here—excited but also nervous about moving abroad, adjusting to a new culture, and starting university all at once. Now that I’m settled, here are a few things that have helped me navigate student life.

Embrace the Cultural Differences and Adapt to the local culture

One of the first things I noticed after moving to the UK is how different university life can be. From the teaching style to everyday small talk, it might take time to adjust and make new friends. But don’t panic! Embrace these differences while staying true to yourself. It’s all part of the experience!

University life at LBU, more than just lectures

At Leeds Beckett, there’s a big focus on independent learning. Attending lectures is important, but you also need to make time for self-study. Lecturers expect you to prepare for seminars, so come ready to discuss important topics. Being active in class is crucial, as is creating a regular study schedule to help you stay on top of things. I quickly learned that it’s not just about showing up but engaging in class.

Take Care of Your Mental Health, it is also important!

Moving abroad can be overwhelming, and it’s essential to look after your mental health. Feeling homesick or anxious is completely normal. I’ve found comfort in small things, like cooking meals from home or exploring Leeds with new friends. Staying in touch with family through video calls really helps me feel connected. However, it’s just as important to build new relationships during your time in the UK. Making new friends here has not only made my time more enjoyable but has also helped me create a support network. One way to support your mental health is by getting involved in the student community.

LBU also offers mental health support, including counselling services and well-being workshops. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help, there’s no shame in taking care of your mental wellbeing.

Get Involved as a LBU Global Ambassador

Making friends as an international student can be tough at first, but getting involved is really helpful. I became a Global Ambassador, which has connected me with people from all over the world. The LBU Student Union is a great place to start—there are loads communities and societies, from sports clubs to special interest groups. Getting involved not only helps combat homesickness but also opens doors for future career opportunities.

Find your own pace and balance, and you’ll succeed

While university is about studying, it’s also about enjoying your time here. Don’t feel guilty for taking breaks! Explore the city, go on weekend trips, or just relax with friends.

Leeds has so much to offer, and taking time to unwind is important.

Budgeting Smartly

Living as a student in the UK can be expensive, with student accommodation, groceries, and public transport. I’ve found that budgeting is key. Planning my expenses at the start of each month has helped me avoid unnecessary stress.

Growth, Confidence, and New Perspectives

Perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned is that stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to grow. My time at LBU has made me more independent, resilient, and confident. It hasn’t always been easy, but these challenges have pushed me to adapt and think differently.

Overall, my time at LBU has been an incredible journey filled with growth and new experiences. I’ve learned so much—not just about British culture, but also about myself. I’m excited for what’s in the next chapter, ready to embrace new challenges at university and opportunities.

For now, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful for every moment.
