Free careers resources you should be using at Leeds Beckett

Hi, I’m Chelsea! I’m in my second year studying Media, Communications, and Culture at Leeds Beckett. Not sure where to start when it comes to balancing part-time work during uni and planning for your career after graduation? You're not alone! It can be tricky to juggle studying, part-time work, and figuring out your future career path. Whether you're looking for a flexible part-time job to earn some extra cash while you study, or you're gearing up for life after graduation, the university has some incredible resources to help you succeed. Here’s a guide to some of the best tools available to help you balance work during your studies and set you up for career success after graduation.

Beckett Careers

#1 Beckett Careers

Beckett Careers is an absolute must for any student, no matter where you're studying — whether it’s at City or Headingley Campus. Trust me, this place is a game-changer when it comes to figuring out your next steps, both during university and after graduation.

Beckett Careers offers a range of services, all tailored to support your career development. If you need help with your CV or cover letter, they’ll give you expert advice on how to make it stand out. I remember feeling overwhelmed trying to get my CV just right, when I met with a careers consultant they gave me practical feedback that made all the difference. They also offer personal one-to-one consultations, so whether you’re trying to figure out your career direction or need advice about a job interview, they’re there to guide you through every step of the process.

They also run LinkedIn workshops, which I found incredibly helpful. LinkedIn is such a crucial tool when it comes to networking and applying for jobs, and their tips on optimising your profile really helped me build a career focused platform where I can share my work experience and create an online portfolio

#2 Beckett Job Board

The Beckett Job Board is a for any student looking for part-time work or graduate job opportunities. The beauty of this resource is that it’s super easy to use and specific to Leeds Beckett students. You can access lots of local part-time jobs and internships, and it's regularly updated with new opportunities. This is especially useful if you want something flexible that fits around your lectures, seminars, and study time.

For me, the Job Board has been an essential tool in securing flexible part-time work during my studies. I have been able to find jobs that work with my schedule and have helped me gain skills that will benefit me after graduation. There are always a variety of roles, from customer service to research assistant positions, all offering the chance to build those transferable skills we all need for life after university. Plus, these roles are often in or local to Leeds, so you don’t have to waste time commuting long distances.

The Job Board is also super easy to navigate. You can filter roles based on part-time, full-time, internships, or even short-term opportunities that are perfect for students who need flexible work. There’s even the option to sign up for email alerts so that you never miss a job opening that matches your interests. And if you’re not sure how to apply or need advice on your CV, the Beckett Careers team is always there to help.

#3 MyHub

In addition to the Job Board, MyHub is another fantastic resource at Leeds Beckett. MyHub is an online platform that connects students with exclusive job opportunities, both part-time and full-time. Think of it as a hub for everything related to employability and job searching. Through MyHub, you can access jobs that are not only flexible around your studies but also geared towards building your skills for your future career.

One of the things I love about MyHub is the exclusive job listings. These opportunities are often more tailored to students like us, who are balancing studies and work, and it’s a great place to find roles that may not be advertised elsewhere like working directly for the university as a student ambassador.

#4 Support and workshops

It’s not just about finding a job – Beckett Careers also run workshops that can help you develop essential skills, such as CV writing, interview preparation, and LinkedIn profile optimisation. As a student who's always trying to improve my job prospects, I find these workshops incredibly helpful. It’s not just about having a degree, but about having the skills to stand out in the job market.

I particularly recommend the CV and cover letter workshops they offer. The one I attended helped me tailor my applications to be much more effective, and I learned how to highlight my skills and experience in ways I didn’t realise before. They also offer interview prep sessions, which I have found invaluable before any big interviews.

#5 The alumni community

Leeds Beckett’s alumni network offers a wealth of inspiration for current students. I’ve used the Alumni page on LinkedIn and the university website to see how other students have successfully made the leap from university to the workforce. If you don’t have a LinkedIn account yet — create one NOW!

Seeing how alumni have used their degree in real-world settings helped me realise just how versatile my qualifications are. Plus, the community provides incredible motivation, by seeing others who were once in your shoes you’ll feel more encouraged to pursue your career goals.

Don’t forget: the alumni network is a two-way street. You’ll not only gain inspiration, but you might also be able to connect with people who can offer advice or even job opportunities.

Balancing part-time work during university while also planning for your future career can feel like a lot, but with Beckett Careers and these incredible resources you're never alone during the process, I have no doubt that they will be just as valuable to you as they are to me.

Whether you're looking for a job to support you during your studies, or you're preparing to step into the workforce after graduation, Leeds Beckett has everything you need to succeed. And if you're ever unsure where to start, don't hesitate to reach out to the Careers team — they're here to help!
