Business and law are closely connected. Every major business decision – from contracts and employment to strategy and regulation – is shaped by legal frameworks and commercial pressures.
On this business management with law degree, you'll build a strong foundation in business management while exploring the legal principles that influence how organisations operate. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. What you'll learn
Gain an awareness of the economic environment that modern businesses operate in. This module will give you an understanding of the principle economic perspectives and theories relating to the operation of the global economy. You'll study important worldwide macro-economic issues as you investigate key global markets, economies, and challenges.
Become familiar with key marketing principles and appreciate how contemporary marketing concepts are used by organisations. You’ll gain an insight into modern marketing challenges and the consequences for organisations if they fail to become customer orientated. This module will help you develop your skills to analyse business environments and successfully apply appropriate marketing mixes and strategies to achieve organisational goals. You’ll learn how to set your organisation apart from others and build a loyal customer base.
Examine how managers can understand and use different financial information to make informed decisions. You'll consider how different shareholders can use financial statements as a means of assessing a firm's performance. To solidify your understanding, you'll gather and analyse information from published annual accounts of a Public Limited Company, identifying its financial position and main policies. By the end of the module, you'll be able to effectively use and recommend accounting techniques and tools to evaluate investment opportunities.
The bond and evolution of data, analytics, and commercial application has rapidly changed the way in which businesses operate. This includes the way they make money, sell services and products, measure success, invest in sustainable people and business practices and the ethical impact decisions have on society. This module will introduce you to the technical terminology needed to understand and confidently explore business data, analytics, and tools. You'll explore the wider context of business information, data types and characteristics, the role of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and the impact on individuals and society. You'll also understand how to use digital tools practically to produce an accurate narrative of findings.
Get stuck into the people side of business. Studying four main themes, you'll cover: motivation, management, leadership and teams. You'll look at these within the context of culture, political environment, global working and intercultural competence. Not only will you gain a strong understanding of leadership and managing people, but you'll also become a critical thinker able to articulate the skills you can offer future employers.
What you'll learn
Build on the knowledge of the rules of contract law that you developed in your first year and gain a grounding in commercial law and an appreciation of commercial factors which influence the operation of a business. You'll examine the general principles of law which govern commercial transaction and you'll set the rules of the substantive law within their commercial context and evaluate the need for the law to provide predictability for commercial decisions and transactions and to give efficacy to freedom of contract.
Understand the structure of business finance and its application to the decision-making processes in organisations. This module aims to give you a general grounding in the role of financial management within a business. We'll examine the theoretical concepts that underpin the modern approaches that businesses take towards finance and look at key financial management decisions. Studying both internal and external sources of business finance, you'll learn how to address financing decisions and raise capital. Throughout the module, you'll also develop your intellectual, academic, communication and problem-solving skills.
Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You'll use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.
Examine employment relations and how to manage employees, the employment relationship and the application of complex employment law and regulation. You'll develop an understanding of the employer/employee relationship, as well as its social, economic, political, historical, philosophical, moral and cultural context.
Understand the nature of managerial decision making and its complexities including the tensions between ethics and cost effectiveness. You'll explore the role of cognition, perception and motivation in decision making, as well as the negotiation skills essential in effective decision making. You'll engage with both theory and practice as you learn the foundations for making team decisions and reaching a collective agreement.
Explore the leadership skills and competencies required for managers in a global environment. This module focuses on managerial employability and how you can gain the expertise to get to where you need to be. We'll equip you with competences relating to job search, application and selection, as well as an understanding of your individual 'personal brand'. You'll also develop a strong self-awareness and the confidence to maximise your employability upon graduation.
What you'll learn
Explore the importance of ethical business decision-making. On this module, you'll take a case-based approach to enhance your existing knowledge of business operations, gaining a critical insight into building an ethical and sustainable business. You'll look at how the governance of firms should be organised and how to consider stakeholders when developing approaches to the social responsibility of businesses. After studying this module, you'll have the ability to critically identify, appraise and make recommendations around the ethical and responsibility impacts of business decisions in a range of settings.
Gain a critical understanding of organisations as a whole. We'll consider topics such as the business environment, strategic capabilities and purpose of organisations, and the importance of culture as a driver of strategy. You'll learn to distinguish between business and corporate levels of strategy, and the dilemmas that come with innovation, mergers and internationalism. Throughout the module, you'll develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to critically analyse, benchmark and evaluate any organisation from a strategic perspective. Upon completion, you’ll be able to contribute to the strategies of any organisation by working with complex real-life business problems.
This module will enable you to analyse the media and entertainment law industries in a contemporary context, both in terms of its practical application and its theoretical framework. You'll study key aspects such as broadcasting, the printed press, the music industry, online news and entertainment, and social networking sites. Your studies will also cover the law relating to intellectual property for the entertainment industry.
Leaders spend significant amounts of time managing the human resource needs of their staff and aligning this strategically with an organisation’s requirements. In this module, you'll learn how the approaches to leadership and behaviour of leaders are considered as they strive to support staff needs in fast-changing environments. Together, we'll evaluate the role of leadership practice in the implementation of strategic human resource management in organisations. We'll also consider the impact of this on those being managed and on organisational outcomes.
Option modules may include
Develop your knowledge and practical understanding of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) including mediation and arbitration. Every legal practitioner must be familiar with ADR due to factors such as the cost of litigation, the pre-action protocols that require parties to civil litigation to have considered a form of ADR to assist with settlement, and the popularity of mediation and arbitration in multi-tier dispute resolution clauses in commercial contracts. This module will enable you to develop the skills you'll need to advise a client on their options for dispute resolution either at the time of drafting contracts or after disputes have arisen.
Explore companies as a type of business organisation. You'll examine the legal relationships between stakeholders in a company and the impact of companies as legal entities on society. During the module, you'll be encouraged to consider the economic, social and political role of company law. Upon completion, you'll be able to apply company law as you critically analyse legal scenarios as well as effectively advise potential litigants on issues concerning company law.
Apply your learning to a strategic organisational issue of your choice. You'll develop and manage a client-consultant relationship, and work in a group supported by a member of staff deliver outcomes for the client using the relevant academic knowledge, skills and critical thinking. This module will be delivered in collaboration with professional mentors, and investors and will add real-life value to your CV.
Work placements give you exposure to the real industry environments you can expect to go into after you graduate. As part of this module, you'll apply for and undertake a paid placement - typically for a full academic year - between your second and third year. This gives you the chance to use the knowledge and skills you've developed during the first two years of your course while developing transferable employability competencies. You'll have the opportunity to build business contacts in your network and gain an understanding of the roles available to you within the careers market.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘placement’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree and will extend the length of your course by an additional year.
Students who choose the placement route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

Alistair MacAuley
Course Director / Leeds Business School
Dr Alistair MacAuley is an academic leader and educator dedicated to developing the next generation of business and management professionals. As Course Director for Business Management & Pathways, he leads a large and diverse undergraduate portfolio, including a significant international cohort, driving curriculum innovation, applied learning, and student empowerment. With a background in retail, operations, and consultancy, he ensures graduates develop the confidence, practical skills, and insight needed to succeed in a complex and evolving world. His research explores how students’ university experiences shape who they believe they can become, drawing on the theory of possible selves and a Wittgensteinian language games approach to analyse how meaning, belonging, and aspiration are formed, leading to the development of the Possible Selves and Language Games Framework to support students’ identity development and future potential.
My work placement has given me the opportunity to live what I've learnt at Leeds Beckett. When I return to my course I'll have a real understanding of the subject and will be able to bring first-hand insights to my work.
