As climate change and a range of ethical considerations forces us to address the true cost of new buildings, you'll practise sustainable interior design through creative re-use of existing structures.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Study in a well-equipped studio environment and award-winning building in the vibrant city of Leeds
- Use traditional art and design inspiration and processes, along with digital media, to sculpt, draw and model innovative interior architecture
- Develop your place-making talents to shape sensory, emotive and tactile contemporary interior landscapes
- Complete design projects in response to human issues, live briefs and external clients
- Become an imaginative, ethical designer at the forefront of interior architecture and design practice and be supported in your individual aspirations and creativity
- Showcase your design talents to the public and impress industry professionals by exhibiting your work at the end of your final year
You’ll be taught by experienced practitioners whose backgrounds are in top architecture and design industry consultancies and practices. Live projects will give you the opportunity to engage with real clients, user groups, experts, practising designers and architects.

Guest lectures
You’ll have access to guest lectures and workshops throughout the year, both on campus and in conjunction with external organisations.

Interior Architecture & Design (IAD) community support network
We have an effective IAD community support network and peer-to-peer support sessions which have been particularly beneficial during lockdown. You’ll have access to evening events free of charge that include a range of social activities to support all of our students’ mental health and wellbeing during this time.

‘M’ is our IAD mentorship scheme, which pairs our final year students with practising designers and alumni who can offer professional guidance when entering the workplace.

Applicants who meet at least one of our contextual admissions criteria will be offered a place on this course with lower (predicted or achieved) UCAS Tariff Points than our published tariff (above).Our contextual admissions criteria are:

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

What you'll learn
Engage in a series of skills based activities and workshops which develop a range of communication and design approaches. These include use of scale, concept model-making, two dimensional drawing techniques and use of digital media.
Develop your personal creative processes by taking conceptual inspiration from context, site, human requirements and activities and the arts (music, poetry and literature).
Gain an appreciation of the cultural, political, ethical, social and historic settings in which designers and architects practise. Develop skills in research, analysis, critical and independent thinking and establish a foundation in structuring and referencing academic writing.
Develop an appreciation of design and architectural standards and the sustainable re-use of buildings. Enhance your research, analytical and digital skills to build an essential design toolkit.
Explore, experiment with and produce design ideas that inform the sensitivities to existing building fabrics, and which manipulate interior space, materials, structure and construction in response to the parent building.
What you'll learn
Focus on the detailed study of design precedent, through completing survey work and the production of detailed technical drawings.
This module will focus on the development of a staircase design, building on your digital manipulation skills, and structure and detail knowledge.
Discover how cultural, historical, socio-political, technological and economic factors promote innovation, challenge design thinking and shape the nature of design. You will be encouraged to research and debate these approaches to support a personal design philosophy.
Expand your research, analysis and analytical capabilities and enhance your ability to structure visual and written material to communicate with employers and other professionals.
Enhance your personal and professional development evidencing your progress with a professional design portfolio. You will consolidate the interior architecture and design practice processes from year two to realise your personal career aspirations and boost your employability prospects.
What you'll learn
Develop the confidence to develop detailed and appropriate design briefs in response to complex agendas, to manage an interior design project from inception to completion, and to mediate between programmatic and pragmatic design constraints whilst maintaining conceptual and creative vision.
Begin the design project that will span your final year. You will explore, interrogate and present potential sketch design ideas using appropriate conventional and digital visual media.
During the second stage of your design work, you will develop and refine your ideas.

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

Lara Rettondini
Course Director / Leeds School Of Arts
Lara Rettondini is Course Director for Interior Architecture and Design in the Leeds School of Arts. She joined Leeds Beckett University in 2021 after holding teaching and leadership roles at the University of Westminster, the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Central Saint Martins (UAL), and Kingston University. Lara is a registered architect, co-director of London-based practice Studio X Design Group, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
