MSc Speech and Language Therapy (pre-registration) at Leeds Beckett prepares you to join the speech and language therapy workforce as part of a multidisciplinary team. Your career will involve advocating for communication rights and supporting individuals to live fully and expressively.
This accelerated, pre-registration postgraduate degree is suitable if you have a relevant undergraduate degree - such as psychology, linguistics, English language, or biology. You'll also be passionate about fostering collaborative relationships that support communication and wellbeing around eating and drinking.
As part of this course, you'll:
- Develop the knowledge and skills to work alongside individuals with diverse communication profiles
- Study via a blend of lectures, seminars, and hands-on learning

Professional recognition
On successful completion of this course, you'll be eligible to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and become recognised as a speech and language therapist (SLT). The HCPC have certain standards all registrants must meet to legally practice under a protected profession title.
You'll also meet the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Eating, Drinking, and Swallowing competency framework, giving you the knowledge and skills to work with people with eating and drinking differences.

There are two parts to this application. We base our decisions on content, not on writing style, spelling or grammar.

DBS Check
Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
Self Declaration Check
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. For some countries, an individual can only apply in person and so it is preferable for those applicants still resident in the relevant country, to apply before entering the UK.Health Check
For certain Professional Body courses, Occupational Health checks are also part of the entry requirements. Applicants will be asked to complete an on-line Health Questionnaire and sent guidance and links on how to complete this following your offer of a place.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Modules, teaching and learning
What you'll learn
This module will introduce you to the foundation subjects needed to study speech and language therapy. These include: development across the human lifespan, anatomical structures and physiological processes relevant to the human nervous system and to respiration, phonation, articulation, hearing, deglutition and language processing; linguistics, phonetics and phonology. It will provide training in practical phonetics and phonological analysis of child speech. You'll develop an understanding of the production, transmission, and perception of speech sounds and how these are used to convey meaning. You'll also learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe simple sequences of sounds and to transcribe English phonemically.
Integrate and apply theoretical learning related to medical sciences, linguistics, psychology, speech disorders and dysphagia across the lifespan to speech and language therapy practice. You'll study the concepts, models and theories underpinning clinical practice and you'll build an understanding of the professional skills required for SLT practice.
Apply theoretical knowledge to clients in a clinical context and develop your professional, communication, and clinical skills. You'll attend three placements to establish all of the masters Year 1 core skills, aligned to all HCPC SOPs.
What you'll learn
Examine acquired and developmental disorders of language, with particular focus on aphasia and developmental language disorder. You'll study language disorders with consideration and evaluation of cognitive, medical, behavioural, environmental and psychosocial issues.
Develop the skills you need to become a confident consumer of research and an evidence-based practitioner. You'll explore how to read and interpret research, evaluate the quality of evidence, and consider how it can inform clinical decision making. You'll engage with key aspects of the research process, such as shaping meaningful questions, conducting literature reviews, and considering how studies are designed. This ensures appropriate methodological decisions are made when answering research questions.
Develop your clinical and professional skills, required for speech and language therapy practice and interprofessional working. This includes interpersonal and communication skills and professional procedures. The development of a professional ePortfolio demonstrates evidence of the HCPC Standards of Proficiency and reflective practice.
This clinical placement module builds on the clinical, professional and interactional skills developed in the clinical placement 1. You'll attend two placements:
Placement 1 – ongoing placement – one day a week for 10 weeks
Placement 2 – block placement – four days a week for eight weeks.
Fees and funding
The annual tuition fee for students entering in the 2026/27 academic year is anticipated to be £9,790 (the maximum annual tuition fee cap announced by the UK Government, which is subject to parliamentary approval).
For each subsequent year of study, the University may charge up to the maximum annual tuition fee cap set by the UK Government, which may increase in line with any uplift determined by the UK Government by law or government policy (such increases are expected to be linked to inflation).

- Placement locations and experiences will vary throughout your course. If you're an international student you'll be responsible for any additional travel or dual accommodation costs. Speech and Language Therapy placements are predominantly in a variety of NHS Trusts and Schools across Yorkshire and the Humber. Placements in Private Independent and Voluntary Organisations may also be selected. Some placements may be local, while others may involve significant travel or require staying away from Placement in Leeds (local – 20-minute bus journey): A return bus fare might cost £5 per day. Over 20 days, this could total £100.00, which may be claimable under TDAE. Placement in Hull (approximately 60 miles from Leeds): If travelling by train, a return fare might be around £24 per day. Over 20 days, this could total £480.00. If driving, at £0.42 per mile for 120 miles per day (return), the total cost could be £1,008.00. Placement in Scarborough (staying Mon–Fri): A hotel stay at £82.50 per night for four nights per week would cost £1,650.00 over five weeks. Return train travel at the beginning and end of each week (approx. £30 weekly) would total £150.00, bringing the overall estimated cost to £1,800.00. Details of this NHS Learning Support Funding and eligibility can be found on the NHSBA Learning Support Funding web pages.
- Occupational health (OH) and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance is essential for this programme. The cost of these checks is covered by your course fees, but you'll need to pay for your ID documents to be verified (£12.80 as of August 2025). Your DBS check is valid for the duration of your course. New checks are only required if you have a break in your studies outside of the normal holiday periods. If you misplace your certificate during your studies, you'll be charged £49.50 for a new certificate. OH appointments cancelled with less than three working days' notice and failure to attend an appointment will incur a fee (£35). If you fail to attend more than one appointment, you'll be referred to the course director. Non-compliance with the DBS and OH processes will be managed through application of the university's Fitness to Practice Policy and Procedures.
Optional Costs
- Student membership of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapy (RCSLT) (currently free of charge but this may be subject to change).
- Travel, accommodation and sustenance associated with your dissertation, research projects or data collection (the cost will vary depending on your topic and individual project and you could choose to undertake a project that does not have any associated costs or conduct it in a cost-effective manner). A typical day trip for fieldwork in the North of England would cost £20-40. An average two-day stay to use an archive or conduct interviews in London would cost £200-300 depending on travel times.
- There are no compulsory trips or visits related to the course. You may be invited to attend educational visits organised by the course team. The details and location will vary. If there is a cost for you to pay it could include travel, accommodation and subsistence. A typical trip in Leeds would cost less than £20.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

In the speech and language therapy workforce, you'll begin your career as a newly qualified speech and language therapist (NHS Band 5). You'll work in diverse settings ranging from hospitals to schools, and community teams to specialist services. You could work independently or in private practice, or move into research or further study.
You'll be equipped to support people across the lifespan with communication and/or eating, drinking, and swallowing needs, advocating for inclusion, and participation in everyday life. Roles can include:
- Speech and language therapist (HCPC registered)
- SLT assistant
Working outside of the UK after graduation is possible, but be aware that different countries have different regulatory standards.

He is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist with extensive clinical experience working with children with a range of Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties, but has a particular specialism in working with people who stammer.
