Research | Therapeutic and justice innovation
Therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) is an interdisciplinary field of philosophy and practice that examines the therapeutic and anti-therapeutic properties of laws and public policies, legal and dispute resolution systems, and legal institutions. TJ values psychologically healthy outcomes in legal disputes and transactions, without claiming exclusivity in terms of policy objectives. It has a broad scope and can conceivably be applied to any area of law, however, it is most commonly associated with justice innovation and criminal justice outcomes.
Whilst TJ in other jurisdictions has had a longer standing history, it has not had much prevalence in the UK until recently. In 2018, the first meeting was held at the Open University. Since then, the UK Chapter has been officially launched, now with a website and a large following. TJUK is looking for volunteers to help with newsletter writing or other projects, so please let us know if you’d like to join.
