Peri O'Connor is a class of 2020 School of Health graduate. Here, she reflects on her time at Leeds Beckett University.

What course did you study and which year did you graduate?

I studied MA Psychotherapy (now called MA Integrative Counselling), and my graduating year was 2020.

How does it feel to graduate?

I’m really happy. I wasn’t expecting it to be so enjoyable but walking across the stage and have someone doff their cap at you, someone say your name and to have people cheer was just lovely. I was also the recipient of the Dean’s prize for Academic Excellence in Postgraduate Study for 2020.

What have you been doing since you completed your course?

I’ve been working; I started up my own psychotherapy practice in 2020 just before lockdown and business pretty much went straight onto Zoom. I’m now back in an office working with people face-to-face.

Why did you choose Leeds Beckett as a place to study?

One of the main reasons for choosing Leeds Beckett was the course. It was relational and BACP accredited, which was really important to me as it meant I didn’t have to do a certificate of proficiency. Also, hearing the course tutor speak at an Open Day really inspired me to come here as well.

What kind of support did you receive at the university during your study?

Individual tutors and my fellow students were a great cohort of people. We were all able to support each other throughout our course, which I really appreciated.

What was your favourite part of studying at Leeds Beckett?

One of my high points was that I was lucky enough to visit Cambodia for a couple of weeks to study alongside student therapists and my tutor, which was amazing. Also meeting the other people on my course; I actually made a friend for life, someone who is now one of my best friends.
