Supporting Youth Sport Coaches World-Wide

A global movement developing free educational resources for coaches working with children and young people.

Supporting Youth Sport Coaches World-Wide

the challenge

Millions of children and young people around the world play sport every day. Quality coaching is central to ensuring that sport is a positive and developmental experience. However, there are very few resources that support coaches working with these age groups.

The approach

iCoachKids was born out of an Erasmus+ grant led by Leeds Beckett University and the International Council for Coaching Excellence. The project conducted research to identify the key components of positive and developmental sport. Based on the findings, iCoachKids developed a suite of three FREE, high quality e-learning Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and a supporting website and YouTube channel.

The impact

Thousands of coaches around the world access the iCoachKids resources every month. Partnership agreements have been signed with national and international bodies such as UEFA, FIBA, World Rugby, ITF, British Cycling and Special Olympics. iCoachKids has also recently received additional funding from Erasmus+ to conduct research into adolescent sport dropout and talent development. Two new MOOCs will be created as an output of these research.

iCoachKids will continue to work with industry partners to raise awareness of the value of youth sport and the need to equip coaches appropriately. Paramount to the continued growth of the movement will be the creation of a global digital community of practice for youth sport coaches. This smart phone-based application will be available before the end of 2020.
