Reader

Dr Sarah Burden is a Registered Nurse (Adult) and Reader in Nursing with specific interests in practice education, end of life care and dementia. An experienced practitioner in intensive care and acute medicine, she has been involved as a Registered Vaccinator in the delivery of the COVID-19 mass vaccination programme in 2021. Sarah teaches on a wide range of modules including clinical skills, medicines management, research, health promotion, palliative and End of life care. She is a Postgraduate Research tutor in the School of Health and personally supervises doctoral students in studies engaged with Health & Social Care Professional Education, Dementia Care, and Healthcare practice. 

Sarah is the current Chair of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Education Forum. She has contributed to publications on Placement Learning and been a member of the Task & Finish group leading the development of the RCN Education, Learning & Development strategy for 2021-2024. She currently sits on the Expert Reference group to take this ELD programme forward. She is experienced in reviewing for publications (texts and journals), and is involved in national and international conference organisation and review in nursing education and research.

Current Teaching

Sarah currently teaches on the BSc Nursing programmes (undergraduate, degree apprenticeships and nursing associates) in key areas of skills development, health, evidence-based practice, leadership & change management, clinical decision making and End of life care. Externally she is involved in management and leadership training for care home managers, and contributes to the Leeds excellence in Practice (LEiP) programme in collaboration with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Research Interests

Sarah works closely with the Centre for Dementia Research in their work on Dementia Care and Services. She was an investigator in the “What works? In dementia training and education” project funded by Department of Health Policy Research Programme, and is currently contributing to a consultancy project developing and co-delivering management and leadership training for care home managers working for Avery healthcare. She has recently been involved in designing and managing a RCN funded scoping review of Clinical Supervision for nurses working in the UK, with a view to develop policy and practice in Clinical Supervision.
