Leeds Beckett American Football is one of the top three university American Football Teams outside of North America in the world. In 13 years, we have cultivated a winning record in all but one season and have won a single National Championship (2019). Boasting great coaching, fantastic athlete development and a continued focus on development, improvement and holistic athlete experience, playing football at Leeds Beckett offers you the opportunity to compete with the best athletes in the country at every single game and practice.

More than just a team

Athletes travel from all over the world to play for Leeds Beckett, from the USA and Canada to players from across Europe. Whether you are D1 Athlete looking to study for a Masters Degree, a High School player wanting to play and study for three years on an Undergraduate Degree or a British Athlete looking to transition into American Football, we have one mission: to help you achieve your potential whilst enjoying the experience of playing at Leeds Beckett.

Everything you need to know

Train to win

The American Football Team is completely based at Headingley campus with a schedule designed to support your academic studies and surrounded by the athlete support systems provided for free to each player.

With Strength and Conditioning, Film Study and Field practices occurring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, athletes are afforded the contact time needed to grow and develop their knowledge, skills and abilities. Whilst having access to free sports massage and medicine from the Carnegie School for Sport Injury Clinic and Elite Strength and Conditioning coaching, athletes are given everything they need to support their physical development.

Equipment

The club provide the relevant equipment, new members should just come dressed in sports attire.

We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.

Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.

Criteria

Playing American Football you may be eligible for a scholarship if you meet the following criteria:

  • GB adult programme member
  • Extensive experience and high performance levels in European leagues.
  • Extensive experience and high performance levels in North American leagues/divisions.

How to get involved

Whether you aspire to be the next NFL superstar or looking to try something new with American football, you can get in touch with Coach Joe about coming along to a training session and getting involved.

Preferably you will have some experience within a team/sporting setting, but we don’t exclude those who want to try something new or want to develop themselves through physical activity. After all, the team live by their motto of being a brotherhood.

Our 'Clean Sport' commitment

All sporting participants have the right to compete in drug-free sport (Clean Sport). Leeds Beckett University adopts the UK Anti-Doping and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) position that cheating, including doping, is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport, undermining the otherwise positive impact it can have on society.

Leeds Beckett University has a free Injury Clinic at our Headingley Campus - giving students the experience they need for massage and injury treatment under supervision from qualified staff (only available during term times.)
