The Carnegie American Football Team is officially the top university American football team in the UK, after being crowned BUCS National Champions in 2019. Working under the leadership of award-winning Head Coach Dale Bottomley, the team practice and play hard. Our players pride themselves on their team culture and if you are looking for a university in the UK to play American football, here you will play with the country’s best, gaining not only new teammates but brothers for life.

How to get involved

Whether you aspire to be the next NFL superstar or looking to try something new with American football, you can get in touch with Coach Dale about coming along to a training session and getting involved.

Preferably you will have some experience within a team/sporting setting but we don’t exclude those who want to try something new or want to develop themselves through physical activity. After all, the team live by their motto of being a brotherhood.

Dale Bottomley

Head Coach Dale Bottomley is a two-time British Coach of the Year Award winner and has experience of UK american football spanning 12 years. Now in his 11th season at Leeds Beckett (4th as Head Coach), Dale and his staff have coached the team to success with them improving from a ranking of 24 in 2016 to the BUCS national championship in 2019.

"American football is going from strength to strength in the UK and winning the championship was an amazing result. We’ve welcomed some fantastic new student-athletes this year from around the world and this season we are stronger than ever as a programme."

Dale is a former Leeds Beckett student and after creating a youth football Academy and coaching various younger teams, he came back to the University as Head Coach in 2016 with an ethos of hard work, determination and support. By inspiring the team to continue to improve and instilling a selfless attitude amongst players, he has sent Leeds Beckett to the top of UK university American football.

What to expect

The American football team spends most of its time based at our Headingley Campus. With a schedule that fits around your studies, it will likely take up 15-20 hours of your time weekly, spread over four to five days, including midweek and weekends. The schedule includes on-field practices, strength and conditioning sessions and recovery sessions. You will quickly get a first-hand experience of what Leeds Beckett University has to offer.

The team’s mantra is ‘The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence’ and all players are expected to strive to reach their full potential whilst playing and studying at Leeds Beckett.
