The Factors Influencing Fans’ Attendance at Football Matches in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Featured 31 May 2015 Athens Journal of Sports2(2):111-122 Athens Institute for Education and Research ATINER
AuthorsBinjwaied M, Richards I, O'Keeffe L-A

This quantitative study investigates factors that affect fans’ attendance at football stadiums to watch Saudi Premier League (SPL) football matches. We adopted the comparative quantitative research method to compare the significance of the factors, which affect fans’ attendance at the football stadiums. Data was collected through a questionnaire. The research was carried out on a sample of 1,506 participants. The factors which have the most effect on fans’ attendance are the facilities and services offered by the stadiums and the fact that the seats are not numbered. However, in the case of SPL, external factors have the most impact on the fans’ lack of attendance at stadiums in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) including the fact that the matches are televised and the lack of commitment of fans to their favourite teams of SPL. This research also concludes that SPL organisers need to add glamour to SPL events by associating the branding of the league with overseas sporting brands, thereby attracting male fans to these events and improving fan attendance through the use of televised media and online and social media, which would help increase accessibility to fans.

The 3rd European Race Walking Conference
Featured 21 December 2016 New Studies in Athletics31(3/4):135-143 (9 Pages) IAAF
AuthorsAuthors: Drake A, Hanley B, Richards I, Editors: Glad B, Apostolopoulos N, Müller H

The 3rd European Race Walking Conference took place at Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, England, from 11-13 November 2016. Organised by a team from one of Europe’s top hubs for race walking, the National Centre for Race Walking Foundation, with support from European Athletics, the conference attracted 59 participants from 10 nations. The programme reflected the current race walking environment with examples of good practice based on athlete-centred philosophies. It included keynote presentations from both the organises and guest speakers, workshops and a special in-depth roundtable discussion led by members of the athlete support team for Tom Bosworth (GBR) who placed 6th in the Men’s 20km Walk at the 2016 Olympic Games with a UK Record performance of 1:20:13. This report provides an overview of the conference by giving descriptions of the weekend’s sessions.

Embedding evidence based course design principles in curriculum design in a UK and Egyptian University
Featured April 2016 Journal of Perspectives in Applied Academic Practice4(2):46-54 University of the Highlands and Islands
AuthorsGreen A, Richards I, Smith S, Hussain I

Curriculum design has received considerable critical attention in the Global North and much research has been published around the key principles of good curriculum design (Meyer & Land, 2003; Gibbs, 2010; Baume, 2009). However, much of the research has focused on the application of those principles to British Higher Education. To date, there has been little discussion around the appropriateness, and relevance of applying the principles to countries in the Middle East and North Africa and in particular, the Egyptian Higher Education system. This paper reviews research about curriculum design and how this informed the development of the course design principles at Leeds Beckett University (LBU). It explores, as a case study, how these principles have been embedded within the Sport Marketing undergraduate (UG) degree course at LBU and then specifically focusses on the challenges of using five principles as a framework for curricular change at Assiut University in Egypt to enhance their specialist provision. LBU were invited to assist the Faculty of Physical Education at Assiut University to develop the first Sport Marketing degree programme as part of the International Inspirations sport legacy programme from London 2012, delivered by the British Council (British Council, 2014). This case study of this project reflects on the challenges of developing a curriculum within the confines of existing institutional regulations and national frameworks as well as the challenges of a cross-cultural shared understanding and cooperation. It will be of relevance to academics who are designing new programmes or who are considering how existing programmes can be adapted to meet the needs of other international institutions.

BUCS: Race and Equality in the Football Workforce Research
Featured 31 March 2023 Leeds Beckett Leeds

Research Overview: This research project, commissioned by BUCS and undertaken by the Centre for Social Justice in Sport and Society at Leeds Beckett University, was designed to respond to the recognition that volunteers from diverse ethnic backgrounds are underrepresented within university football, and as participants in BUCS football leadership programmes. The project sought to understand how football clubs, universities, and BUCS can contribute to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in volunteering by producing insight to: • Understand who is engaged and not engaged in university football volunteering. • Gain insight into the football volunteer experience. • Identify the contextual conditions that enable or constrain volunteer engagement.
