Divide submissions into groups for different markers

This guide provides information to help staff set up Turnitin assignments for marking by different tutors.

You can do this using module groups, students will nominate someone in their group to submit and then they will need to share the marks and feedback with their group. Alternatively you can add marks and feedback for other group members who have not submitted by using a Turnitin grading template, see Marking without a submission below.

For an alternative assessment tool to allow students to submit a collaborative assignment please see this guide: Blackboard assignments for group submissions.

Before you start, first set up groups in your module by following the steps in our guide to creating groups. You can then create assignments for each of the groups.

This scenario is useful for selecting specific groups to set collaborative assignments where one student in a group can submit - please note that only the student which submits will be able to view the grades and feedback.  That student will then share the mark and feedback with their other group members. Alternatively, the tutor can download the marked paper to distribute to the groups members or use a Turnitin grading template to mark non submissions (see section Marking without a submission).

If you’re not sure which type of assignment you need to create, please view our online assessment and feedback mapping diagram.

Now the groups are set up, you can create assignments for each of the groups. More information can be found in our guide to creating a Turnitin assignment.

The following shows the steps required to set up group assignments that are intended for dividing the marking between colleagues.

Using Adaptive Release as described below, only students see their own group assignment link. Only one of the students in a group will submit rather than all of them.

Instructors can still see and access all the assignment links without any restrictions. It’s important to clearly indicate which assignment the tutor should be marking, this can be done in the assignment name. You can also change the settings to mark anonymously in the submission areas.

Create assignments for each of the groups.

a. Create an assignment for each group and give the assignment a name that identifies which colleagues will mark it.

For example:  [Name of Tutor] Assignment - Group 1, [Name of Tutor] Assignment - Group 2.

To stop students from being able to see all the assignment links for every group, you can restrict who can see the links by placing an Adaptive Release rule onto each submission link.

a. Click the action link (arrow) next to the assignment name, and click Adaptive Release from the menu.

b. To make the assignment visible to specific students, in the Membership section there is a section labelled Module Groups. The Items to Select box should contain a list of the groups you created earlier.

c. Click the group you’re making the assignment visible to, then click the right arrow to move the sub-group into the Selected Items box.

d. Click Submit.

You can follow the steps in our leaving feedback for a Turnitin assignment guide in order to mark the submission in Feedback Studio.

You can download the marked papers to distribute to all students per group if required.

Alternatively, you can use a Turnitin grading template to add marks and feedback for non submitters, see next section Marking without a submission.

When using Turnitin for collaborative assignments only one student in a group can submit. The student will then need to share the mark and feedback with other group members. Alternatively, you can use a Turnitin grading template to add marks and feedback to other students in the group (the non submitters).

a. Open the Turnitin assignment and locate the student.

b. Click the grey pencil icon  next to the student's name.

c. A pop up will appear with information regarding the grading template. Please note that marking without a submission acts like a student submission to the assignment and the student will not be able to submit to the assignment unless resubmissions are enabled in the assignment settings.

d. To create a grading template click Confirm. [Grading Template] will appear in the Title column.

e. Click [Grading Template] to open Turnitin Feedback Studio and add marks and feedback.
