Two fully funded PhD student bursaries in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management

The School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management (ETHM) at Leeds Beckett University is looking to recruit two highly motivated individuals for PhD study. These are fully funded student bursaries that will provide a tax-free stipend of £17,668 (pro-rata into 12 monthly payments) and cover full fees for three years.

This is a unique opportunity for enthusiastic and high-achieving individuals looking to undertake PhD research that aligns with the School’s research priority areas:

  • Events, Tourism and Hospitality Leadership
  • Responsible Tourism and Sustainable Development
  • Social Justice through Events and Tourism
  • Public Policy for Transformation in Tourism, Events and Hospitality

Plus Icon PROJECT OVERVIEW

Candidates are required to develop a proposal for PhD research that aligns with one of these four research areas. To discuss a potential idea for a research proposal, contact Director of Research Degrees Professor Kate Dashper – k.dashper@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.

Successful applicants will join a team of over forty academics and twenty-five research students conducting applied and fundamental research, aiming to advance knowledge and influence policy and practice in the events, tourism and hospitality sectors. As a PhD student you will join a vibrant and supportive research environment, taking part in regular seminars with visiting scholars, enrolling on our PhD training programme and enjoying opportunities to develop your skills in teaching, research and knowledge dissemination. Find out more about our PhD programme.

  • You should have, or expect to achieve before 01 October 2023, a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent, as well as a master’s degree in a relevant subject
  • Awards will be made on the basis of merit and research potential. This relates to your past academic record, any related professional experience and to an assessment of your likely aptitude to complete a PhD in your chosen topic in the time allocated

  • 2 x full-time sponsored postgraduate research studentships available
  • UK and Full International Fees + Bursary covered
  • Start date: 01 October 2023
  • PhD students are entitled to a laptop and will have the opportunity to apply for funding to support fieldwork, attendance at conferences, workshops and/or meetings, during the 3-year studentship
  • The PhD studentship is for a period of 3-years funded full-time study.  Funding will be subject to satisfactory progress throughout the project

As part of your application, please provide a CV and research proposal. The proposal should align to one of the School’s research priority areas and should outline: the topic of your proposed research, the questions it will address, a short review of relevant academic literature, and an indication of how you will conduct your research. It is an integral part of the application process (maximum five pages single spaced).

You are strongly advised to discuss your proposal with colleagues in ETHM before making your application.

We can only consider complete applications. The research degree application is complete once you have uploaded all of the following:

  • Your application form
  • Your research proposal, and CV (research proposal guidance: Research Proposal Guidance)
  • Copies of your bachelors and master certificates, including transcripts
  • Copy of your IELTS (or equivalent) certificate (if applicable) further information can be found on our Graduate School FAQs
  • Copy of your passport
  • Applicants should use the research project reference ETHM Bursary in the email subject line when submitting their applications
