Why did you choose your course at Leeds Beckett?

One of the main reasons to choose this course was the subject matter and curriculum. The quality of the course is excellent and the facilities that students get access to are also immensely helpful.

Tell us a few details about your current role and how you got here.

After I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Landscape Architecture, I spent some time honing my expertise in the landscape construction industry. My grandfather’s career in architecture greatly inspired my design skills and aesthetic.

I established my business, MJL Garden Design, in 2007. Since then, I have worked predominantly on the design and construction of private spaces and gardens. I have also been an exhibitor at RHS shows and have contributed to several RHS medals. This has included Best Construction and People’s Choice awards at RHS Malvern 2019 and 2022 and the Platinum Award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live in 2022 and 2023. RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2024 is my debut design and build show garden.

I believe in showcasing what is achievable with sustainable construction methods and innovative products. I am also an accredited member of the Association of Professional Landscapers and the British Association of Landscape Industries.

How did your course at Leeds Beckett help you?

My course helped me gain technical and detailed knowledge of landscape architecture which has helped me tremendously in my career. During my course, I also learnt how to visualise a space and make the best use of any space.

What are some of your best memories of studying at Leeds Beckett?

I enjoyed the pace and structure of the course. I also built great relationships with my tutors and fellow students.

What has been your biggest success so far?

Building my first self-designed show garden is the next step in what has already been a fantastic start to 2024. I was awarded an APL Award for a private client garden in March 2024. I also received the prestigious Matthew Bradley Memorial Cup sponsored by Landform Consultants, individually nominated and selected, which recognises landscaping excellence.

What advice would you have liked to receive when you were a student?

I think it is important for students to gain insights into running their own business and the broader set of skills required for this. A general insight into accounting, pricing, supply chain management, marketing, and being an employer are also useful for anyone seeking to become an entrepreneur.
