MSc Medical Biochemistry graduate Olivia stood outside on her graduation day

Olivia Stone is a class of 2021 School of Health graduate. Here, she discusses her experiences on her course.

What course did you study and which year did you graduate?

I studied MSc Medical Biochemistry and I graduated in 2021.

Why did you choose to study your masters degree at Leeds Beckett?

The course drew me to Leeds Beckett. I studied my BSc Chemistry in Sheffield, but they did not offer the right course for me to study at masters' level. I was interested in carrying out more in-depth lab work and the course and facilities at Beckett allowed me to do this. I also wanted to move nearer to home to study my masters and I knew Leeds was a great student city, so it was the perfect fit for me.

What have you been doing since you completed your studies?

After I graduated, I initially took a job working in home insurance for a bank but quickly realised I wanted to do something more suited to me and my university study. So, I combined my love of science with teacher training and now I’m a science teacher at a secondary school.

What advice would you give someone just starting out on the same journey?

Just go for it. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after finishing my undergraduate degree and took the summer to think about it. I spent that whole period worrying about what I was going to do. This meant I applied very late for my masters, but Leeds Beckett responded to my application quickly and I started my course a couple of weeks later. The application process was very straightforward. Looking back, I think I was worried it would be the hardest thing I would ever do, but it was much more manageable than I expected. I even went straight on to do my PGCE!
