'High Performance' and 'Focus Sport' scholarships

We have been supporting students to reach their full potential through our Sports Scholarship scheme since 2002. Notable alumni who have benefitted include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman, and Tom Bosworth — all of whom have gone on to achieve success at the highest levels of sport.

Building on that legacy, our recent cohort includes three-time European Gymnastics Floor Champion and Paris 2024 Olympian Luke Whitehouse, Nottingham Forest and Jamaica netball player Rhea Dixon, and a number of emerging international athletes across a range of sports. You can view the full list of 2025/26 Scholars [here].

Each year, we award Sports Scholarships to outstanding student-athletes who demonstrate both the potential to excel in their chosen sport and a commitment to upholding the values of the university. Our scholars represent us in BUCS competitions and are supported to develop as both athletes and ambassadors of the university.

High Performance Scholarship

This award is for student athletes who are competing at a very high level in individual or team sports. This would mean attendance at major Senior Championships such as Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth Games. Or be a top ranked age group athlete. In team sports a player would need to be a in a Senior or age group National team that competes in an International Tournament.

N.B. We are well aware that athletes and team players who compete at an International level already have excellent support from their clubs, sponsors and national governing bodies, therefore we will endeavour to put together a bespoke scholarship package that is best suited to their needs rather than providing access to a service or services that are not needed.

So, first and foremost, our S&C programme is we're here to support our student athletes and scholarship athletes, so we work with primarily the focus sport teams. Currently we're working with around 11 sports teams, university sports teams, and then the other side of our programme is supporting talented athletes across some of our partnerships. We're really lucky now to have some great facilities on campus. In the gym, we might have students training alongside Olympians. We've got obviously the partnerships with Leeds Rhinos, Leeds United, so lots of athletes here on campus. You know, you can be a first-year student training on the track or in the gym with Olympic medallists, so it's a pretty cool, friendly, supportive, but performance environment to be.

Important Information

We have a limited number of Scholarships to award in 2025/26 and therefore in addition to requiring you to meet the above criteria we will give priority to students who can demonstrate that they will make a significant contribution in their respective sport.

Meeting the criteria does not equate to entitlement to a scholarship.
