Plastic in the ocean

Your waste won’t go to waste at our Beckett Kitchen, we ensure that 99% is diverted from landfill by working closely with our specialist recycling partners. This helps to reduce carbon and methane emissions which contribute to global warming.

Food waste is converted into nutrient-rich biofertiliser, called ReGrow, and renewable energy through anaerobic digestion by ReFood. This efficient closed-loop process provides farmers with a sustainable alternative to non-renewable fossil fuel based fertiliser. ReGrow is excellent for soil health and fertility, which in turn is great for crops – creating more food. And when there is food, there will almost always be food waste, and so the process starts again.

A Too Good To Go collection bag on a counter at Beckett Kitchen

Too Good to Go provides a channel for surplus food from stores and restaurants to go to good use. By working with Too Good To Go Beckett Food will reduce food waste by finding people willing to pay a reduced rate for food that would otherwise go to waste. Our "Magic Bags" contain triple the value sold - so for a bag priced at £3.00, you'll get £9.00 worth of food from our Cafés and Beckett Kitchen.

To get your bag download the free Too Good To Go app from your App Store, set your location and look out for our uploads – generally they will be available to collect after 2pm Monday to Friday. Just reserve a bag and then collect it from either;

Leeds Beckett Honey jars, made from bees on Headingley Campus

Did you know we have a colony of bees happily buzzing around Headingley Campus?

To help us get it from hive to jar, we call in the help of father/daughter bee-keeping team Benefers’ Bees.

They ensure the each jar contains fresh, raw & unfiltered honey, which naturally contains natural vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and other essential nutrients. Not all honey is created equally and our contains the tastes of all the flora cared for on campus from which the bees forage.

You can pick up a jar at our outlets or on colder days we serve it with tea and lemon as a natural immunity booster!

We are passionate about sourcing our food and drink responsibly and ethically. We are proud to source as many of our ingredients as we can locally and in a sustainable way. This includes seasonal sourcing of ingredients - look out for limited time products like our popular Yorkshire Rhubarb layer cakes in summer! We are committed to local sourcing to reduce the carbon footprint of our meals and to ensure we supply the freshest produce packed full of taste.

This includes using MSC certified fish, Fairtrade products and locally sourced food.

Here's just some of the things we've been doing on campus:

  1. Biodiversity

To improve the Biodiversity on our Headingley Campus, we have extensive woodland management and biodiversity programmes in place that have established over 40 new species of flora and fauna on campus since 2004. Also, all our capital development plans at our city campus include targets to improve the biodiversity of our urban environment.

  2. Carbon reduction

Since 2005 we have reduced our carbon emissions by 65% and generate 9% of our electrical demand onsite through our Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit and Photovoltaic Arrays. This equates to over 850 thousand kWh’s of electricity, enough to power over 290 homes!

  3. Sustainable travel

Our colleagues and students can take advantage of discounted travel passes, bike hire and bike maintenance workshops.

18% of staff cycle or walk to work.

63% of our students walk or take the bus.

  4. Waste

67% of our waste is recycled and nearly a third is used to make energy.

Less than 1% of waste from Leeds Beckett goes to landfill.

We have achieved this by implementing recycling across a number of areas, including our construction projects, which recycle 95% of all waste generated. Over 10,000 tonnes of demolition waste has been reused on site.

  5. Sustainable construction

Our university is one of the first in the world to get Passivhaus status for Carnegie Village Halls of Residence. Passivhaus buildings are highly insulated, keeping temperatures warm in winter and cool in summer.

Toilets in the Rose Bowl, on City Campus, are flushed using harvested rainwater.

  6. BeckettSphere

Beckettsphere is a project based scheme that brings together colleagues and students from all areas of the university to play an active role in make LBU more sustainable.

We currently engage more than 70  colleagues and students in the scheme and involve over 15 teams.
