James at graduation

Carnegie School of Sport graduate from 2020, James Doherty, attended the Leeds Beckett 2022 Graduation Ceremony and shares with us his experience studying at Leeds Beckett and what his favourite thing about studying the course was.

How was your Graduation Ceremony?

It’s been a really good day so far, I am very pleased I am finally attending a graduation ceremony. It’s been a long time coming because of COVID-19. It’s been a really good day and great to see everyone again.

What have you been up to since finishing your course?

In the last couple of years since I left uni, I got a job, then I broke my back and neck, so that hasn’t been fun. I have been recovering from my injury and concentrating on getting back healthy and back to work.

Why did you choose to study Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett?

I chose Leeds Beckett because it’s one of the best universities in the country to study BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science! The facilities are fantastic, and the location is great surrounded by many high profile sports teams and businesses.

What was your favourite part of your course and why?

My favourite part had to be working in the labs. Learning and using the lab equipment and then applying that to real-life practical situations.

The equipment and facilities the sports courses offer are incredible and even more so now with the impressive new sports building, I wish it was there when I started uni!

Can you think of a challenge you went through at university and how overcoming it made you feel?

Yeah, I failed my first year and didn’t do as well in my second year either, so it made me realise that I needed to work harder and go to the library and take it seriously. From that, it made me stronger as I was so close to quitting, but here I am now graduating and very pleased I asked for help and stuck to it. The teaching staff are really supportive and help guide you in the right direction if you get side-tracked.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying your course?

Don’t take it lightly, go to the library and do your work at the same time as enjoying yourself. It’s true what they say, hard work does pay off.

What’s next for you?

I would like first to get healthy again and then go into strength and conditioning. I used to play football for Barnsley Academy, so I always had a sports / football background. Studying the Sport and Exercise Science course just heightened my desire for this career path and I can’t wait to see what the future holds when I overcome this hurdle.
