Chloe is a final year BA (Hons) Physical Education with Outdoor Education student at Leeds Beckett. Here, Chloe shares why she chose Leeds Beckett, what she's most enjoyed about studying here and why she'd recommend her course.

Course: BA (Hons) Physical Education with Outdoor Education

Tell us a bit about what drew you to Leeds Beckett and your subject area.

Leeds has always been one of my favourite cities, so it was a top choice when looking at university courses.

I'd always been active and loved PE as a subject, so I nosedived towards choosing this course at university.

My PE teachers at school always supported me and said I should consider a career path in sport as they knew it was something I was knowledgeable in and would enjoy.

I knew Leeds Beckett was a top university for sport, with the facilities on Headingley Campus being a massive draw for me.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I saw Leeds Beckett did a PE course with Outdoor Education, which is something I was interested in.

I decided to choose this course, due to it giving me that bit extra on my qualification, and generally being something that I wanted to develop in and experience more.

The outdoors has been something I never really put myself into, however, being in Leeds I have been able to visit the Yorkshire Dales and closer locations such as Otley and Ilkley. This has provided opportunities to develop skills such as map reading and overall stamina.

As previously mentioned, I also love Leeds as a city, so when it was between this university and my insurance, I always knew I would have chosen Leeds.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

Definitely the social aspect. I lived in Carnegie Village my first year, which allowed me to get to know a lot of people through my own flat and others on campus.

Having both flat mates and course mates allowed me to speak to people I would know for a year or longer, and then in turn get to know their friends, creating a really friendly environment to feel comfortable in.

Living on Headingley Campus was brilliant for first year, as it was right where lectures were, and I felt comfortable getting to know the campus as I spent most of my time there.

The people you meet at university will stick with you forever, and I am so grateful for gaining such an incredible group of people, especially through my course.

The PE course mixes with the PE with Outdoor Education, which was another thing that made my experience brilliant, as the modules in second year mixed, so we got to know each other on a personal level which was lovely.

Is there a piece of work or project you have worked on that you are particularly proud of, and why?

Yes, in my second year in the research modules we had to do a project proposal for our dissertation.

I already had a very good idea on what I wanted to do my dissertation on, which made me enjoy this module, as I could get make a head start on researching and collecting literature.

In turn, after completing this piece of individual work, I managed to achieve an 80%, which was the highest grade of the whole year - the reason why I was so proud of myself.

I have also been on the Dean's List for my work in first year and the first half of second year, which is an additional achievement I didn't think I would get.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying your course?

Definitely do it. If you’re deciding between PE or PE with Outdoor Education, choose Outdoor Education – it gives you more experience with dealing with different things, and a different way to get involved with primary and secondary education without just going into teaching.

The modules, especially for the outdoors, are also very creative including things such as creating a film on an adventure sport, and making a day for SEN kids, and carrying out at the end of a semester.

It gives you an opportunity to do things you may not do on other courses, and I’ve loved every second of it.
