What will I need?

We've pulled together two easy pancake recipes with no weighing scale required - just a standard tin can. Think soup or baked beans can, but make sure it's really well rinsed out.

First up is classically wide and thin British pancakes, then the thick and cakey stacked American style. For both recipes you'll need a frying pan, a mixing bowl or two, a whisk or fork and a spatula (unless you're a confident flipper!). As for ingredients, you might want to make some swaps to make them vegan/veggie friendly - coconut milk is great dairy free alternative for milk using the same measure. As for egg, a mashed banana (around 2-3 tablespoons) will bind the pancakes just as well as an egg.

Classic British Pancakes

Makes 4 large, thin pancakes

  • 1/2 can of plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can of milk
  • Oil to brush the pan

Method:

  1. Fill 1/2 can with plain flour and tip into a mixing bowl. Crack the egg and add in.
  2. Fill the can with milk and add to the bowl - whisk for a minute
  3. If you can wait - tricky, we know - let the batter rest in the fridge for 20mins
  4. Brush your frying pan with oil and turn the heat up to medium - when the pan is hot pour in batter - rotating your pan slightly from side to side to create an even thin layer on the bottom of the pan
  5. Cook until golden brown (around a minute) then flip - go safe with a spatula or try the classic flip throw - then cook the other side for around a minute
  6. Repeat until you use up all your batter

American Style Pancakes

Makes 8 small but thick pancakes

  • 1/2 can plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4ish can milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • Oil to brush pan

Method:

  1. Add flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a bowl and give a whisk to mix the ingredients
  2. In another bowl whisk together milk, butter and egg
  3. Pour the dry ingredients (the flour mix) into the milk mixture and stir gently - be careful not to overmix
  4. Brush your frying pan with oil and turn the heat up to medium, when the pan is hot add 2-3 tablespoons of batter
  5. When the surface of the batter starts to get bubbles (around 1 minute) flip carefully with a spatula and then cook until golden brown on each side
