Business Centre Client Stories: PCH Engineers Ltd

Exploring the stories and journeys of people from all walks of life who make up the Business Centre community.

We’re meeting with organisations who are based at the Business Centre. The Business Centre is part of The Knowledge Exchange and offers beautiful and affordable private office space overlooking Queen Square, along with virtual office packages with mail forwarding and registered business address facilities. TKE Placement student Harry met with Paddy Hendry to talk about his business PCH Engineers Ltd.

Paddy Hendry, Director of PCH Engineers Ltd

What does PCH Engineers do?

PCH are a project management company who specialise in a type of engineering called Building Services Engineering. We are Engineering Project Managers, applying our knowledge and experience of mechanical and electrical engineering to project management.

Have you been with the Business Centre long?

We’ve been renting a premises from the university for four years now.

How has your experience been?

It’s been really useful - its very handy for new businesses who have a lot to do, it’s been very simple. The lease isn’t long, so it doesn’t feel like we’ve signed up to something where we’ve committed to pay for a space for a long time. For small businesses who might want to leave in a few months or a few years it’s incredibly useful.

How have you found the Business Centre services?

The fact it comes with all services included, like the service office, lighting, heating, and it all comes under a simple bill to the university once a month is great, and the Wi-Fi works really well too. Usually, it’s a burden for small businesses to sign up to all these bills so when you’re just starting out this is very useful.

Kulshaan and Janet are a pleasure to deal with, they’re really pleasant and friendly, and it’s all very personal. At the Business Centre it doesn’t feel like you’re dealing with anything corporate or commercial. Also, there are services like the business mentor that can give advice and I’ve always taken on board what they have to say. The facilities in The Knowledge Exchange at The Rose Bowl are useful too.

What do you like about the Business Centre?

I like the walk in - I commute from the train station and coming to this end of town is nice to get a bit of fresh air, and Queen Square is lovely too.

For me, as I’ve got kids at home and my wife runs her business from the house, it’s a perfect solution. It’s somewhere between running the business out of your kitchen/bedroom and taking on a more serious lease at an office. Right now, it’s very flexible and a low admin burden, it’s very friendly and understanding.

Would you recommend the Business Centre to other businesses?

Yes, I definitely would, and I have done in the past. It’s a nice place to start - for a small business, I’d recommend somewhere simple and easy that’s also low risk. As it's an office outside the house it allows you to be more productive. Again, it’s really low cost and flexible.

Could you sum up your Business Centre experience in one sentence?

Really friendly, easy to access and a great place to take the next step on a small business journey - as easy as it can get!
