Why I chose to do an apprenticeship at Leeds Beckett

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider community.

Leeds Beckett University offers a number of apprenticeships across its schools and we’re going to find out more about the Trainee Nursing Associate which is offered in the School of Health.

Sarah Church, who is 32 and from Pateley Bridge, is starting her degree apprenticeship (DA) this week. She currently works at Harrogate Hospital in the outpatient department as a senior health care support worker and has been there for nearly eight years. She has been telling us why she’s chosen to do a DA at Leeds Beckett.

Why a Degree Apprenticeship?

“My passion has always been to care, and I have dreamt of being a nurse since I was a child – one of my first memories is bandaging my Grandad’s arms up when he got pecked by his hens I our yard and him calling me his own little nurse.

When I first heard about the nurse associate position coming available in my department, I couldn’t wait to apply. It gives me the flexibility that I need to work around my home life, raising two boys, whilst also carrying on earning a full-time wage. This opportunity has meant I can continue with my current job, but also learn some new skills, develop my own learning and experience university.”

What made you choose Leeds Beckett University?

“I have been for a look around Leeds Beckett, and everyone was super friendly. It wasn’t as overwhelming as I thought. The Nurse Associate programme at Leeds Beckett has a really good, structured timetable and will mean we get to see all that we need to and opens the doors to a lot of new ventures.”

What do you want to get out of your course?

“After the Nursing Associate, I want to continue in my current position for a while, but I hope to continue studying, and do my top degree, in the hope that one day I can become a specialist nurse. I cannot wait to get started on my future career and begin my new journey as a nurse associate trainee!”

What are you most looking forward to?

“I am really looking forward to starting the course – I am most looking forward to sitting in the lectures, the practical learning and going on placements that will give me the opportunity to gain new experiences. I never thought I would be able to go to university, and be a Mum, but this is giving me the chance to do both!”

Nursing Associate Apprenticeship

Developed in partnership with local health care providers, the FdSc Nursing Associate Apprenticeship has been designed to offer organisations a flexible pathway for apprentices to achieve the requirements for the generic Nursing Associate Practitioner. Nursing Associates work with healthcare support workers and registered nurses to deliver care for patients and the public. FdSc Nursing Associate is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, successful completion of the course provides eligibility to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a nursing associate.
