Studying a Degree Apprenticeship

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider community.

Leeds Beckett University offers a number of apprenticeships across its schools and we’re going to find out more about the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship which is offered in the School of Health.

Joanne Tranmer, who is 40 and from Micklefield in Leeds, is starting her degree apprenticeship (DA) this week and has been telling us why she’s chosen to do a DA at Leeds Beckett.

Why study a Degree Apprenticeship?

“At the moment I’m employed as a Senior Healthcare Support Worker at Harrogate Hospital – I work in the Main Outpatients department. I previously studied a degree but now I want to further my career and my understanding of the healthcare setting. I hope to become a registered nurse in the future.”

What made you choose Leeds Beckett University?

“Leeds Beckett is the university enlisted with my employer and I live in Leeds so location-wise it’s perfect for me as I don’t want to study away from home. I’ve heard positive feedback from someone who is currently on the course.”

What do you want to get out of your course?

“I’m hoping to enhance my existing knowledge and learn so much more about the field of nursing. I hope to build a wide skill set which I can put into great use in my role at my current hospital. Ideally, I would like to continue on to gain a full registration as a nurse and continue a successful career in healthcare.”

What are you most looking forward to?

“I’m most looking forward to learning new skills and gaining knowledge that allows me to become a confident member of the NHS, providing excellent patient care. I’m excited for new aspects of learning and being in the university environment.”

Nursing Associate Apprenticeship

Developed in partnership with local health care providers, the FdSc Nursing Associate Apprenticeship has been designed to offer organisations a flexible pathway for apprentices to achieve the requirements for the generic Nursing Associate Practitioner. Nursing Associates work with healthcare support workers and registered nurses to deliver care for patients and the public. FdSc Nursing Associate is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, successful completion of the course provides eligibility to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a nursing associate.
