BA (Hons) History graduate, Rohan Dhaliwal, tells us about his experience studying his course and why he is happy he chose to go to university.

Course: BA (Hons) History

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to your course?

I have loved history since a young age, it was always one of my favourite subjects throughout school and at A-Level. I was initially unsure about attending university and considered pursuing a history-based apprenticeship instead. However, I attended some university open days, including Leeds Beckett. When I attended the open day at Leeds Beckett University, I was instantly drawn to the course, which covered many of my favourite areas of history and assignments that seemed practical and appealing. I decided to give university a chance and applied straight away.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I am from Wales and had previously visited Leeds during my visit to Leeds Festival, where the city appealed to me. I attended an open day and thought the campus and its location in the city was something that I really liked. Leeds Beckett also had an extremely high student satisfaction rating for its history course, which made Leeds Beckett the choice for me.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

My favourite thing about my time at Leeds Beckett was studying something I am really interested in and meeting like-minded people, some of whom are very close friends.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

University is not like school, but the lecturers are all extremely friendly and helpful and dedicated to helping students succeed. The course gives you self-study time where you are encouraged to focus on your own learning and build your knowledge, I would recommend doing this as it significantly helps for assignments. Also, don’t be scared of the dissertation in the final year, just make sure you pick a topic you’re interested in then the research will be extremely rewarding. Finally, enjoy yourself, manage your time well, and you will have fun and create friends for life.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have applied to study a PGCE in History to become a secondary school History teacher, hopefully.
