Patrick Baynes, Men’s Football Club Captain said:

“There is a massive stigma around men’s mental health and many men, especially lads our age, choose not to speak up if and when they have any problems or stress that is impacting their life. The university football club is a hugely crucial environment for a lot of lads. Not only do we provide the physical health side of playing and training, we also provide the mental health side of having a good group of mates that you can chat with, laugh with and support each other through life.

After a very successful Movember campaign, we as a committee, thought it would be best to invite Andy’s Man Club and the Leeds Beckett Mental Health Team to come in, explain the routes the lads can take if they do need someone to talk to and to try and break that stigma to encourage them that they are able to speak up whether it be to their friends, their family, fellow club members or even other men at an Andy’s Man Club group session.

We all know people who could be struggling whether we are aware of it or not and this session reminded us to check in on our mates and remind them that it is okay to not be okay.”

Cameron Noyes, LBU Football Coordinator added:

“As well as continuing to strive for success on the pitch, we have really concentrated our efforts in enhancing the Football Programme experience and developing the profile of their university clubs.

This Andy's Man Club workshop facilitated by the Athletic Union is just a further example of work we are doing to support our students within the football programme to prioritise their mental health and wellbeing, all whilst balancing their personal, sporting and academic commitments.”
