Work experience: My first shoot in San Diego

By Saffron Carroll (BA Sports Journalism)

We went down to Pacific Beach, just south of Crystal Pier, to gather some footage of the rugby squad.

Interviewing the rugby team on San Diego beach

After an 11 hour flight from London Heathrow, we were feeling the affects of the jet lag and, with the 27-degree sun beaming down on us, lugging the camera equipment was quite a challenge but we were devoted to collecting some quality shots of the team in action.

This was our first shoot so we were excited to get the cameras out and brush up our manual filming skills.

We gathered footage of the boys practising their drills in preparation for Saturday’s game, incorporating a mixture of wide, mid, and close-up shots to add some variety to our package.

We enjoyed the challenge of working in the heat and it was nice to shoot some interviews with the team about their stories.

As a journalist, you simply never know where you could be sent, so you must be ready for all climates … but there are certainly worse places to film than the hot, sandy beaches of Southern California.
