Sustainability at Halloween

Did you know that 12.8 million pumpkins are expected to be left uneaten this Halloween, in the UK alone? As Halloween heads our way many of us will be buying decorations, costumes and pumpkins. However, in the excitement, we can sometimes lose track of our impact on the environment.

Here are a few ideas to help make your Halloween more sustainable:

Eat your Pumpkins!
Carving a pumpkin can be good fun and they do make good decorations but make sure to bring it in after Halloween. This way you can chop the pumpkin up and turn it into something tasty. You could even season and roast the pumpkin seeds to make a great snack. You can find pumpkin recipes on the Hubbub website.

Costumes:

When shopping for a costume this Halloween could you buy items from the charity shop and DIY a costume? Try and buy or create an outfit which you can re-wear the next year. You could even set up a costume swap with friends so that you can make sure the costumes are reused and you can still wear a different costume each year.

Decorations:

If you plan on decorating your place you may be able to buy decorations that can be reused next year which will save you money and reduce waste. You could also try to make some of your own decorations.

Have a Happy Halloween!
