Cycle security is unfortunately an issue on our campuses, as it is in all bigger cities. We do get bike thefts on campus and we get a surge in thefts from residences, particularly at the city campus from the Rose Bowl. September when we get lots of new student cyclists in the city is when thefts are at their peak.

There are things you can do to minimize your chances of being a victim of bike theft, or at least make sure if you are, that you still have a bike to ride in the future:

Use a D-Lock

Most of the bike thefts on campus are because the bike was secured with a cable lock or locked to something that is easily cut. Use a good quality D-lock when leaving your bike on campus, we sell these for £20 in both our workshops email transport@leedsbeckett.ac.uk for more details, thinner cable locks can and often are cut in seconds.

Use campus secure storage

We have a range of secure storage for staff and students on campus, it isn’t totally secure but is much better than leaving your bike on the street. Email transport@leedsbeckett.ac.uk for details and access.

Insure your Bike

Many home contents insurance policies will cover bikes off the premises if you have all risks cover,  although you may have to pay an excess on a claim. This is worth doing if your bike is worth more than a few hundred pounds.

If your bike is higher value it is worth getting specialist bike insurance.

This guide from Money Saving Expert goes though what type of cover is best for the bike you may have.
