Injury can change everything, but the right expertise can change it back. This sport and exercise therapy degree – accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists – ensures you’ll develop the clinical knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to support athletes and physically-active individuals. Depending on your interest, this could be anything from minor training injuries or physiotherapy strategies to full elite performance recovery. You’ll build a rigorous foundation in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and rehabilitation science, while developing the hands-on skills to assess injury, design treatment plans, and deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
As part of this sports and exercise therapy course, you’ll:
- Study a broad range of sport, exercise, and therapeutic modules, building your scientific understanding alongside applied clinical expertise
- Complete supervised clinical placements to accrue the working hours required to register as a qualified sports therapist

Industry recognition
This course is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists, recognising the quality and professional focus of your learning. You’ll also be able to register as a student member in your first year, beginning your journey into the sports therapy profession while you study.
Real patients, real experience
You’ll gain hands-on clinical experience in our professionally run, eight-bed Sports & Exercise Therapy Clinic. This student-led service offers free treatment to university staff and students, giving you the opportunity to work with real patients presenting real injuries and rehabilitation needs. Under expert supervision, you’ll develop practical skills in assessment, including analysing range of movement before planning appropriate treatment such as sports massage and rehabilitation exercises. The clinic supports placement learning from your first year through to your final year, helping you build at least 200 hours of supervised clinical experience. Working in a professional environment alongside partners who use the university's sport facilities, you’ll graduate with the confidence, competence and practical expertise needed to support athletes and physically active individuals in real-world settings.
Placements: learn in the real world
Your clinical development continues beyond campus through supervised placements in a variety of professional environments. These may include university clinics, local sports therapy providers, and other self-sourced settings that spark your interest.
You’ll also have opportunities to volunteer at local and national sporting events, delivering pitch-side support and gaining invaluable experience treating athletes in real performance environments. These experiences build confidence, clinical reasoning, and professional identity.

You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Modules, teaching and learning
What you'll learn
Develop an understanding of key joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves of the peripheral joints and spinal column. You'll also gain an understanding of joint anatomy and biomechanics for functional human movement.
Study the aetiology and pathophysiology of common musculoskeletal injuries in sports and exercise therapy practice. This module will develop your knowledge of the subjective and objective examination process, outcome measures, and the practical skills to safely assess peripheral and spinal regions.
Explore massage techniques such as effleurage, petrissage and tapotement. You'll learn advanced soft tissue techniques, muscle energy techniques, and patient data handling and storage.
Learn about professional standards and requirements to practice as a sports and exercise therapist. You'll develop your skills in clinical note taking and academic writing skills.
Study the practical application of basic first aid, thermal therapies, principles of exercise, the use of walking aids, and taping techniques. This module will develop the theoretical underpinning of your knowledge of therapeutic interventions used in sports and exercise therapy.
Develop a foundation of key sport and exercise physiology knowledge and understanding that you'll need for modules on this course. This module will cover four key fundamental topics of sport and exercise physiology; cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal muscle and energy metabolism. You'll learn about the functionality of each of these topics and develop your understanding of how human performance can be tested. This module will also enable you to understand how exercise training theory is applied to improve exercise capacity. You'll develop laboratory and practical skills in data collection and analysis.
What you'll learn
Study the theoretical and practical application of manual and electro therapies, including the principles of pain modulation. This module will develop your knowledge, understanding and application of manual and electro therapies used within sports and exercise therapy practice.
Understand the clinical decision making and differential diagnosis processes within a sports and exercise therapy context. This module will build upon the assessment skills you gained in your first year of study. You'll also develop your clinical reasoning.
Gain the basic life support techniques required to manage a range of general first aid situations.
This module will introduce you to the key concepts in sports biomechanics. You'll study mechanical principles as they apply to the human body in sports and exercise and appreciate the influence of these principles on human performance and injury. This module will also develop your laboratory and practical skills in data collection and analysis techniques.
This module will introduce you to research study design. You'll develop skills and understanding in the critical appraisal of literature, research methodologies, data collection and analyses used in research.
Explore rehabilitation interventions and the stages of exercise rehabilitation. This module will develop your understanding and application of rehabilitation programme design with the integration of exercise principles and prescription.
Gain the relevant knowledge and practical skills to plan, deliver, manage and evaluate a safe, effective and progressive adapted physical activity programme. Your plans will be for referred clients/patients with specific controlled conditions.
What you'll learn
Gain experiential learning within sport, exercise, and rehabilitative environments under the direct supervision of academic staff and industry professionals.
Present an extended protocol dissertation project that demonstrates the skills required for undertaking, analysing, and evaluating research. This module is primarily self-managed and you'll be guided by tutor-facilitated discussions to aid the development of your extended protocol.
Develop an understanding of the broader holistic prevention and management of injury and illness in a sport and exercise context. You'll gain an understanding of psychological and nutritional factors for injury and rehabilitation, and the role of psychological screening in a sports and exercise therapy context.
Option modules may include
Gain the skills to manage patients who undergo operative procedures helping to gain a level of understanding about the operative process and application of rehabilitative procedures.
This module will enable you to develop the skills and attributes required for self-employment and business start-up. You'll create a business plan for a chosen business concept that includes marketing strategies, financial forecasting, and self-reflection upon personal skills and characteristics required for self-employment and business.
Understand the role of biomechanical principles in health and sports injury. This module will enable you to develop an understanding of the structure and function of biological materials and their response to external loading. You'll explore the underlying factors in health and sports injury, including postural stability, individual differences and external risk factors. Studying this module will incorporate laboratory-based activities that will improve your biomechanical skills and enable you to undertake a deeper analysis of important aspects of health and sports injury.
Explore teaching and learning practices in education. This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of theoretical models of learning, methods of teaching and learning, and critical reflection of practice.
Builds upon Year 1 and 2 skills enabling you to debate the current concepts being employed within the scope of practice of Sports and Exercise Therapy. You will be exposed to both theoretical and practical concepts, encouraging applied clinical reasoning and a more global outlook on the evidence-based practice that is relevant within the profession.
Explore strength and conditioning theories and practices for use within a sports and exercise therapy context. Upon completion of this module, you'll have the ability to critically analyse strength and conditioning practices and use them to design periodised programmes to improve injury rehabilitation or performance outcomes.
Gain an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of obesity. You will apply your knowledge to design an appropriate lifestyle programme for an individual to manage their weight, and to critique contemporary approaches to obesity management.
Gain in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease, medical assessment and therapeutic procedures, and study the role of exercise, nutrition and psychological interventions within the multi-disciplinary management of rehabilitation and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Learn to critically review a variety of contemporary health issues and critique the role physical activity and nutrition can play within the regulation and or rehabilitation of stages of disease.

- Society of Sports Therapists student membership (a one-off payment of £170 will be required when you enrol for your course. The cost may be subject to change).
- Placement locations and experiences will vary. You'll need to pay for any additional travel in year 3.
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and/or occupational health (OH) check. The cost of these checks is covered by your course fee, but you'll need to pay for your ID documents to be verified (£12.80 as of August 2025). Your DBS check is valid for the duration of your course. New checks are only required if you have a break in your studies outside of the normal holiday periods. If you misplace your certificate during your studies, you'll be charged £49.50 for a new certificate.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.
