Co-creating 'Family BYC' for South Asian and Black Communities: Lessons
Learn about co-developing 'Family BYC', a cricket program for South Asian and black communities, highlighting inclusivity, unity, and community.

Alosh K Jose and Dr Faatihah Niyi-Odumosu will be discussing the exploration of the integration of co-development practices, this seminar will unveil the journey and insights from the Family Backyard Cricket (BYC) project, targeting South Asian and Black communities. Family BYC is a programme where families from Black and South Asian families come together to engage in accessible, inclusive cricket. Our talk aims to showcase how collaborative efforts have shaped a family-centric cricket program, emphasising physical activity, community engagement, and cultural inclusivity.

Through real-world examples, attendees will gain an understanding of the challenges and triumphs in creating a sport-based initiative that bridges generational gaps and fosters unity within diverse communities. Join us for a deep dive into the process and outcomes of making sports accessible and enjoyable for all families.

Speakers

Alosh is the co-founder and CEO of Cricketqube, a social enterprise aiming to improve community health and engagement through cricket. After completing his MSc in International Sport Management at Northumbria University with commendation, Alosh has been active in the sports management and healthtech sectors. His work with Cricketqube, recognised by three Innovate UK awards, focuses on inclusivity, reducing GP visits, community cohesion and engages over 1,000 individuals monthly.

Alosh's commitment extends beyond his business to mentoring and academic collaboration. He shares his expertise through panels and conferences, influencing the next generation of social entrepreneurs. Additionally, Alosh contributes to the enhancement of sports courses at multiple institutions, including Newcastle College and Sunderland University, by integrating real-world insights into the curriculum. He also co-hosts the monthly ALIBSA (Ageing Lifestyle in Blacks and South Asians) webinar, a knowledge-exchange platform to tackle health inequalities through health education and self-empowerment.

His research interests are in the areas of public health, sports engagement, and inclusivity. Alosh's efforts in Cricketqube have not only showcased significant community impacts but also set a benchmark in applying sports for social good.

Dr Faatihah is a medical doctor and an associate professor of physical activity and health. She obtained her medical qualification (MBChB) from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria; MSc (Medical Physiology) from the University of East London, United Kingdom; and PhD (Clinical Exercise Physiology) from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. She is a Commonwealth Scholar (and mentor), secretary of the Low-Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) Research Council - International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH). Founder and co-host of the monthly ALIBSA (Ageing Lifestyle in Blacks and South Asians) webinar, a knowledge-exchange platform to tackle health inequalities through health education and self-empowerment. She holds associate editor roles with the Journal of Physical Activity and Health (JPAH) and Cities and Health.

Co-designing physical activity and health improvement interventions in health and chronic lifestyle disease (Type-2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease); interdisciplinary approaches to developing effective and sustainable physical activity across under-represented groups (elderly, ethnic minorities); rehabilitation research; robotic assistive technology. With my background in clinical exercise physiology, her research has the potential to develop interventions that are tailored for people with different long-term conditions.
