Master of laws student Imbenzi George

Imbenzi lives in Canada but is currently undertaking a Master of Laws in International Law with a focus on Conflict, Security and Human Rights at Leeds Beckett University, with an ambition to be at the forefront of policymaking.

He balances his postgraduate level study alongside various demanding roles, including being Director and CEO of a global company. We caught up with Imbenzi to ask him about his experience of the distance learning programme at Leeds Law School so far.

Why did you choose to study a master’s at Leeds Beckett?

I chose Leeds Beckett University for its distinguished reputation in the field of international law. The specialised course on Conflict, Security, and Human Rights resonates deeply with my interests and professional aspirations. The university's commitment to imparting practical knowledge combined with theoretical concepts was a significant draw for me.

Please describe your distance learning experience at Leeds Law School.

The distance learning experience at Leeds Law School has been enriching and flexible. The platform is user-friendly, with a wealth of resources at my disposal. The virtual learning environment has made it seamless to engage in discussions, access lectures, and collaborate on assignments. This mode of study has allowed me to continue with my professional commitments while pursuing higher education.

What have your relationships been like with tutors?

My conversations with tutors have been constructive and supportive. While the nature of distance learning limits physical interactions, the faculty has been proactive in ensuring regular virtual check-ins, feedback sessions, and addressing any concerns promptly.

How much of your time per week have you dedicated to your studies alongside your employment?

I dedicate approximately 15-20 hours a week to my studies. Balancing my roles, particularly as a Director and CEO, alongside my master's program has been challenging but manageable, thanks to efficient time-management and the flexibility offered by Leeds Law School's distance learning system.

How have you found the experience studying in another country to achieve a UK university qualification?

It's been a fascinating journey. The experience has broadened my perspectives, offering insights into international standards, practices, and thinking. Achieving a UK university qualification remotely has been a testament to the globalised world we live in today, where quality education is accessible, irrespective of geographical barriers.

What have been your highlights of the course?

Diving deep into topics like Conflict, Security, and Human Rights has been immensely rewarding. Engaging in case studies, collaborating on projects, and the stimulating discussions with peers from diverse backgrounds stand out as some of the course highlights.

What are your career ambitions?

With my extensive background in leadership, public policy, and now a deeper understanding of international law, I aim to be at the forefront of policymaking, ensuring that decisions made are rooted in justice, equity, and promote global peace and understanding.

What advice would you give to other students considering a distance learning master’s at Leeds Beckett?

Be proactive in your engagement. Regularly interact with tutors, peers, and use all the resources available.
Set a disciplined routine. Distance learning offers flexibility, but it's essential to be consistent in dedicating time to studies.
Embrace the diversity of thoughts and perspectives. The beauty of such program lies in the amalgamation of global viewpoints.
