Christina Schlegel outlines her project.
Exploring Soviet Propaganda and the Negotiation of Multi-Ethnic Identity in Soviet Belarus, Ukraine, and Crimea, 1964-1991
christina schlegel
"This research project explores different aspects of identity in the Soviet Union, such as national, ethnic, and local identity. Soviet propaganda about its multi-ethnicity will be compared to and contrasted with the experience of ordinary citizens, mainly Ukrainians, Belarussians, and Crimean Tatars. My research focuses mainly on material culture, domestic nationalism, and the role of language in shaping identities in the Soviet Union. The project aims to show the legacy of the Soviet experience in Ukraine, Belarus, and Crimea, in order to better understand the current society and culture of the region."
