A Tale of Two Streets: Exploring Social Inequalities in Sheffield (1900–1939)Â
teresa everson-smith
"My research examines social inequality in Sheffield between 1900 and 1939, exploring how disparities in housing, health, education, and employment shaped both the city's development and the lives of its inhabitants. By comparing two contrasting streets, one in an inner-city working-class district and another in an affluent neighbourhood, I analyse how local and national policies either deepened divisions or fostered greater equality. Understanding these historical inequalities is significant, as many similar issues persist today. By uncovering Sheffield’s social disparities, my work offers valuable insights in addressing modern inequality, not just in Sheffield but in cities across the UK and beyond."
