Understanding alcohol addiction and recovery- is it different when you’re autistic?

"Anxiety and mental health issues contribute to addictions, including alcoholism. Understanding unwritten social rules causes anxiety for many autistic individuals. Using my experiences as an alcoholic in recovery, and an individual with a late in life autism diagnosis, I cross reference my techniques for understanding the world around me with the experiences of other autistic individuals in recovery from addiction. Considering Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), one of the oldest and largest recovery organisations in the world, finds its strength in its sense of fellowship, and its members’ regular attendance at meetings with a strong social aspect, my research asks how autism-friendly AA is.   "
