'The impact of media communication of sex differences research and endorsement of gender essentialism on discrimination against women, particularly in the context of intimate partner violence'

Katie Barker

"My research is mixed methods and consists of three sequential studies. Firstly, a systematic review and meta-analysis on the causes, consequences, and correlates of gender essentialism on discrimination against women. Secondly, a focus group study on how members of the public interpret media communication of 'hardwired' psychological sex differences research and whether individuals draw upon essentialist assumptions when discussing gender and their perceptions around the causes of, and solutions to, male aggression. Finally, an experimental study on the impact of biological versus social explanations of sex differences in the media on attitudes excusing male-perpetrated domestic violence against women."
