'Who's comprehension monitoring?  Co-constructed repair of intersubjectivity in child-adult conversations'

Lorette Porter

During interactions, both adults and children sometimes fail to understand what the previous speaker has said, leading to a breakdown in intersubjectivity or shared understanding. The first study in the project uses Conversation Analysis to examine conversations between young children and adults. It focuses on instances where the child did not understand, the circumstances and ways in which children request clarification, and the role adults play in getting the interaction back on track. The second study applies these findings to clinical assessment, exploring how clinicians and children orient to non-comprehension within informal and dynamic language assessment.
