research degrees

Your research matters

Are you looking for somewhere you have the freedom to explore, and the support to push yourself further? At the School of Health, we're working on a diverse range of projects that affect the health and wellbeing of people all over the world.

You'll be part of a community of many different backgrounds, ages and interests. You'll be able to do your work in exceptional facilities, with the support of experienced supervisors. And you'll be in a city that's full of health organisations, industry partners and policymakers.

You'll have everything that you need to exceed your expectations, and make lives better.

Our research programmes

  1. Masters by Research (MRes)

Are you looking to take your first steps into a research career? The MRes is a stepping stone between undergraduate and PhD-level research, and is a good starting point for someone looking to explore a new subject area, or different academic research options.

    It's typically a one-year full-time degree, or two years part-time.
  2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

If you choose to complete a PhD programme, you'll spend your time researching a topic that contributes new knowledge to your field. You'll be trained in research skills which will be valuable in many different careers. You'll be assessed with an oral exam called a "viva voce", and you'll be asked to present your research in a thesis of up to 100,000 words.

A PhD can take four years full-time, or six years part-time.
