From linguistics and phonetics to psychology, you'll master the wide range of knowledge and skills you need to make a difference to people's lives. On placement, you’ll gain experience in a variety of settings where you’ll be working with adults and children to support communication and swallowing. We offer a combination of theoretical and practical learning in exceptional facilities with a strong focus on application so that you'll qualify as a confident and resilient professional.

This past autumn, I had the privilege of undertaking a virtual placement opportunity with a hospital’s SLT service. It involved working one-to-one with a client who had been isolated to a side room of a rehabilitation ward."
School of Humanities and Social Sciences was the perfect fit with my interests and values. The Speech and Language Sciences team had a fantastic reputation for supporting students, collaborating with clinicians across the Yorkshire and Humber region, and excellent innovative teaching.
The “virtual placement” took place over 3 months and involved twice weekly sessions carried out by the student (facilitated and observed by a qualified SLT), a weekly reflection, feedback and discussion sessions, and some separate case study tutorials to help inform the core skills assessment at the end of the placement.
Colleagues in the speech and language sciences group are high achieving professionals and academics with a strong commitment to applied speech and language therapy. Many have significant clinical experience prior to joining the university and our teaching team is joined regularly by specialist clinicians from practice. Members of the team have links with the Royal college of Speech and Language Therapists as well as with NHS Trusts, voluntary and private sector organisations.
I chose the Speech and Language Therapy course because I want to become a qualified professional, who can really make a difference to people’s lives and well-being. SLT work covers a huge range of people and abilities.

You'll have access to specialist facilities including a communication suite and a dedicated speech and language resources room with a huge range of assessment and therapy materials available to students to access to support their learning and placement planning.
We offer clinical supervision for newly qualified and experienced therapists who may be working in independent practice or employed in settings where they are not part of a wider speech and language therapy team. Our supervision package can be tailored to suit your needs and includes access to on-line library resources and other learning materials as well as our Resources Room. Every step of the way, we aim to make you feel supported and empowered. This is a challenging yet rewarding field, and you'll study it with the help of experienced and inspiring teachers. We work with practice partners across the Yorkshire and Humber region to give you first-hand training, and you'll discover inventive new thinking through our specialist research in aphasia, head and neck cancer, stammering and paediatric speech and language issues.
