live small group teaching

Scheduled live group seminars facilitated by a tutor with students participating in structured learning activities such as reflection, discussion, problem solving, action planning etc.

  • Live online, small-group seminars with structured, tutor-led activities can be effective for deeper-learning, reflection and discussion, peer-to-peer support, building a learning community and providing instant feedback
  • However, problems with connectivity and lack of suitable equipment could limit student attendance and interaction in live seminars leading to an increased sense of isolation and some students falling behind
  • Make sure you have a contingency plan to mitigate any technical issues. For example, set-up ongoing asynchronous discussions and collaborative activities using MS Teams Channels or MyBeckett discussion boards. It may not be appropriate to record seminar groups
  • To ensure seminars run smoothly provide clear joining instructions, details of the session format and structure (including timings for activities) and expectations for participation in advance
  • You may wish to collate students' questions in advance to form the structure of your seminar
  • A range of interactive tools can be used during seminars to improve student engagement including screen sharing, video sharing, an interactive whiteboard and polling/quizzing tools such as Poll Everywhere (which can be easily shared from yours or a students screen)
  • Using webcams during small group seminars can help create a sense of connection and social presence for both the students and the tutor
