What is happening?

Work is taking place between October 2022 and early 2023 to replace the right-hand lift in the Sheila Silver Library. Unfortunately this will result in some noise and disruption for you and we apologise for the disruption to your studies.

Contractors will set up from 17 October and begin removal of the old lift from w/c 24 October.

Why is this taking place during the term?

We usually try to carry out building works during the summer to avoid disturbing most students but we weren’t able to schedule the work during summer 2022. These kinds of projects are still affected by supply chain delays for parts, and by engineers catching up on projects delayed by Covid.

The lift is outdated and badly needs to be replaced as soon as possible, so we don’t want to delay until summer 2023.

But I need to use a lift in the Library!

The left-hand lift remains in operation throughout but you may have to wait for it.

Any issues with the lift should be reported promptly to Library staff so we can alert the lift engineers. As the engineers will be onsite replacing the other lift, they will be able to pause that work to immediately repair the left-hand one.

You can reserve books and we will bring them to the ground floor for you to collect.

What are you doing about noise?

The Library and the Leeds Beckett Estates team are liaising with the lift engineers to keep the impact of noisy works to a minimum and we have asked for extra soundproofing in the area surrounding the left-hand lift.

The engineers will begin work as early as possible in the morning each day and as much work as possible will be carried out during the Christmas vacation, when the Library is less heavily-used. It will also be paused during the January assessment and examination period.

The basement will be used to bring in materials, equipment, and engineers, reducing any disruption they would cause by passing through the ground floor.

Don’t forget that the Headingley Campus Library is also available and may provide a quieter environment for study.

Serving a busy library with a single lift isn’t ideal—thank you for your patience and cooperation with this situation.
