‘Convention of The North 2024’, hosted by Clive Myrie took place over two days at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. Following a request from the office of Tracy Brabin, elected Mayor of West Yorkshire, twelve students from the undergraduate and postgraduate Events Management courses volunteered at the event. Their roles included welcoming visitors at the registration desk, providing press and VIP management support, workshop doors/badge checking and Way Finding.

Postgraduate student Meshal Alanazi worked two long days at the event and really enjoyed the experience, ‘It was an honour to be part of the event and see how much work goes into organising and running such a large-scale, high-profile event’.

With over 1,000 delegates, the students worked across the Royal Armouries museum space and New Dock Hall. Panels of industry leaders and academics talked about the role of AI on the region, Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet politicians presented their case for the future of the region and the Mayors of the Northern cities outlined what investment is essential to the success of the region.

Abi Courage, final year Events Management Student and volunteer lead for the event, also enjoyed the experience, ‘I loved working at the Convention of The North, it was great to work with the Worldspan team. I experienced a different perspective to what I'm used to, I work on conferences in my full-time job, but it was great to see how another team work and what systems they use. It was also a valuable volunteering experience and an opportunity to be part of such a big event that will shape how we do things in the North.’

Lois Morgan, Senior Project Executive, Worldspan added, ‘We had the pleasure of working with a group of student volunteers from the UK Centre for Events Management at Convention of the North 2024. The students were professional, polite and helpful throughout and we are extremely grateful for their support. Volunteers were committed and picked up any tasks without hesitation. They demonstrated great customer service/people skills when interacting with our delegates, which was a priority for this event. They really were a great asset to the team, and we have no doubts that these students will go on to achieve brilliant things.’
