Reclaiming the 'social' in social work at JSWEC 2022

Planning for the UK Annual Joint Social Work Education and Research (JSWEC) Conference 2022 (Thursday 23 June - Friday 24 June) is really shaping up and this face-to-face event is not to be missed!

Dynamic collaboration

The conference title – Reclaiming the ‘Social’ in Social Work – is particularly fitting, given the global pandemic and all the challenges that everyone has faced.

This feels like the right time to remind ourselves of our social role and interrogate our responsibilities as social workers and social work educators. It is also a good opportunity to learn wider lessons from others in associated professions.

The Conference provides a space for all of us to come together face to face, much missed after such a long time!

While meeting platforms such as Teams and Zoom have allowed us to continue with our work, and, indeed, open up new possibilities, the chance to come together face-to-face allows for a more dynamic exchange of ideas and collaboration.

Speakers and sessions

We have managed to engage excellent speakers. Kerry Hudson, an award-winning author, will draw on her own experiences on growing up in poverty and the key lessons learned.

Hári Sewell brings his experience of working in the health service and his specialist area of social justice, equalities and ethnicity, race and culture in mental health.

Davy Hayes will talk on ‘the troubles’ in Northern Ireland and the wider global lessons for social work and other professionals.

The Workshop’s themes provide a great range of opportunities for people to submit abstract, and ensure we have a contemporary, highly relevant opportunities for great presentations.

The venue at the Rose Bowl, Leeds Beckett University in Leeds City Centre is an easy, central place to get to, with excellent Conference facilities and places to meet and talk. Leeds is a very dynamic City with a range of very good accommodation - and places to eat and drink!

We look forward to seeing you all there!
