This course is accredited by the Centre for Advancing Practice. The Centre was established to standardise post-registration education by accrediting advanced practice courses that achieve the standards outlined in the multi-professional Advanced Practice Framework. Entry requirements
Applicants should have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subject of Health. Applicants who do not meet this academic requirement are advised to undertake the Professional Profile Development modules in order to apply for recognition for prior (experiential) learning. Details of the module can be found at this link.
You should also have a minimum of 2 years post registration experience and be able to demonstrate through your personal statement that you have developed professionally to a level that prepares you for an advanced clinical role.
Your personal statement should address the following criteria in no more than 1200 words:
- Identify the main national and local drivers that have influenced your expansion into an advanced clinical practice role;
- Describe how you will incorporate advanced clinical practice into your role and its benefit to service users;
- Evidence of how your use of research has developed clinical practice;
- Demonstrate how you implement change and how you monitor and evaluate practice;
- Evidence recent continual professional development;
- Evidence your understanding of the legal and role boundaries of the advanced practice role
Applicants will need to satisfy the requirements for access to the Non-Medical Prescribing module as stipulated by the NMC/HCPC. Further information and a link to the application form and process can be found at this link.
Your application should be supported by two references, either academic or professional; one of the references should be from a professional who can confirm that you have undertaken the necessary development for Advanced Practice. A template can be accessed at this link and references should be accompanied by a covering letter on headed paper or emailed directly by the referee.
All applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.
Applicants who successfully completed a PG Diploma Advanced Practice or PG Diploma Advanced Clinical Practice course at Leeds Beckett in the last five years will be considered for advanced entry and will only need to complete a further 60 level 7 credit points for the dissertation module.
Applicants who successfully completed their PG Diploma course more than five years ago or completed a similar PG Diploma course at another university can apply for credit transfer through the Recognition of Prior Learning route.

Selection Criteria
We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Teaching & Learning
What you'll learn
Enhance your knowledge and expertise in core body systems that practitioners are required to assess, e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, musculoskeletal, head and neck etc.
Your studies will build upon the Advanced Health Assessment module to focus upon complexity and pathophysiology
Achieve the required professional standards to be able to register as a non-medical prescriber. This module will be recorded with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health and Care Professions Council as applicable.
Identify and critique your future learning goals in the context of your professional role and the wider context of healthcare.
Explore how knowledge is constructed through the research process, different study designs and research methodology, and how to propose a research project to learn more about practice.
Produce a substantial research project on a self-selected topic of interest to demonstrate developmental learning in breadth and depth, in addition to a variety of academic and practical skills.

- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
- Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies
Access to course resources, equipment and facilities, including:
- Clinical skills suite with specialist equipment in purpose-built rooms enabling a variety of sessions to be carried out in a suitable and safe environment
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.
Essential Costs
- As part of your educational practice/clinical experience, you will need to travel to different health and social care sites to complete placement experiences; in many instances, these costs will be covered by your employer as part of your staff travel expenses process
- Access to professional-level diagnostic equipment; your employer may supply the equipment and we will be able to loan some items to you during your period of study, but alternatively, if you are in private practice you may need to purchase the equipment (£300 plus insurance)
Optional Costs
- You may choose to spend time with health and social care providers and services to broaden your practice/clinical experience, you may need to pay for any additional travel costs
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
