What is computer science?
Computer science is about understanding how technology works and using that knowledge to solve problems, develop software, and create new possibilities. From the algorithms behind AI to the cloud platforms powering businesses and the networks connecting billions of devices, computer science sits at the heart of modern life. It’s a fast-moving field full of opportunities to experiment, innovate, and make an impact.

Develop the skills to build what’s next
From artificial intelligence (AI) to the apps we use every day, computer science is changing how we live, work, and solve problems. At Leeds Beckett University, you’ll explore the technology behind these changes and learn how to create solutions of your own.

Whether you’re interested in developing software, exploring AI, or discovering how complex computer systems work, this course will give you the foundations to shape your future in a fast-moving industry.

On this computer science degree, you'll:

  • Discover exciting areas of computing, including software engineering, programming, AI, network communications, and cloud-based systems
  • Turn your learning into practical solutions by applying computer science principles to problems across different industries
  • Get hands-on with industry-relevant tools including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Python, Java, OpenStack, Eclipse, Visual Paradigm, and Android Studio
  • Develop skills beyond coding by working on projects, building your teamwork and project management abilities, and learning agile techniques used across industry

Industry-recognised learning
Our BSc Computer Science course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS): Chartered Institute of IT. This accreditation recognises the quality of our curriculum, assessments, student support, and wider learning experience, helping ensure your studies reflect current industry standards and requirements.

Put theory into practice
Through practical projects, group work, and presentations, you’ll apply your knowledge to real computing challenges. Test your ideas, collaborate with other students, and discover how to approach problems from different angles. You can also put your problem-solving skills to the test through hackathons and competitions.

Get a head start on your career
Our strong industry relationships can help you connect your studies with the workplace. You'll also have the option to take a placement year, giving you the chance to gain paid work experience, build your professional confidence, and see how your skills translate into a career.
Previous students have gained experience in computer science at NHS Digital, Sky, and Rolls-Royce.

Experiment, explore, and create
As a BSc Computer Science student at Leeds Beckett, you'll get hands-on with the technology behind modern computing in our specialist facilities. In our dedicated networking lab, you’ll learn how to configure networks and use industry-standard network management tools. You’ll investigate how connected systems operate and develop a practical understanding of the infrastructure that keeps our digital world moving.

You'll also have access to our sandbox lab, where full administrator rights give you the freedom to experiment with a range of technologies. This is your chance to explore systems development using Raspberry Pi and the Internet of Things (IoT), developing your technical skills as you put different technologies to the test.
