What you'll learn
Gain an insight into computers, operating systems and networks - discover how they work internally and how they work with each other to provide the common computing experience with which we are all familiar.
Develop your core understanding of many aspects of computer science. This will include software engineering, computer networking, digital media, AI, cloud computing, sustainable computing and big data.
Learn how to think like a programmer. This module introduces core programming concepts such as variables and data types, sequence, selection and iteration, basic algorithms, and structured programming. With a focus on traditional procedural type programming, you'll develop problem-solving skills by designing and implementing algorithms to address common computing challenges, building a strong foundation for further programming study.
Develop the skills needed to design and build effective database systems. This module introduces database modelling, development and implementation skills. This module equips you with database modelling and implementation, while exploring the organisational contexts in which databases are used. You'll consider ethical, professional, and data protection issues alongside practical development skills. By the end of the module, you'll be able to design and implement a database system to meet the needs of a simple business application.
Build on your programming knowledge by exploring object-oriented programming and its associated design techniques. You'll study key concepts such as classes, inheritance, and polymorphism, and learn how to implement them using a modern object-oriented language. As the module progresses, you'll develop more complex programs structured across multiple files and classes, reflecting contemporary software architectures. You'll also learn to apply object-oriented design using appropriate modelling notation.
Explore how information is shared efficiently and securely across computer networks. This module introduces the principles and techniques that underpin modern communication systems, including networking protocols, error detection and recovery, multiplexing, and security mechanisms. You'll also examine how the limitations of communication media influence the performance and capabilities of applications, building a strong foundation in network communication concepts.
What you'll learn
Develop advanced programming skills from both a technical and team-based perspective. This module explores topics such as exception handling, interfaces, collections, and algorithm analysis, alongside collaborative development practices. You'll gain an understanding of algorithm efficiency and problem-solving techniques including searching, sorting, and recursion, preparing you for complex software development challenges.
Develop your knowledge of operating systems to a level that will allow you to support, administrate and even develop small parts of a live operating system.
Explore the basics of local area networks (LANs) and wireless LANs. You'll develop an understand of the operations and key components of LANs and WLANs.
Develop your knowledge of algorithms and data structures, and the latest development in artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. You'll explore the ways in which they are applied in various contexts for example smart cities, health, business, and manufacturing.
Develop your professional, technical, and entrepreneurial skills through collaborative project work. Working in small teams, you'll design, develop, and present a solution to a real or case-study-based problem, supported by specialist staff. You'll apply project management techniques and professional working practices while developing research, design, evaluation, and presentation skills. The module also explores the legal, social, ethical, and professional issues that are related to working in industry contexts.

Explore the technologies that power interactive websites and web-based systems. This module examines client-side, server-side, and data storage technologies, focusing on the three-tier architecture that underpins modern web applications. Through experimentation and real-world case studies, you'll analyse how data is flows between tiers and how applications manage user interaction. You'll also consider key issues around data validation, performance, and security within contemporary web environments.
Build on your experience of designing and implementing databases. You'll apply your database application development and programming skills to build robust applications.
Learn to apply the theory of robotics in an industrial setting. This module teaches you how to apply AI techniques in the implementation of a robotics system within a given scenario. You'll analyse and understand various industrial processes and determine which types of automation are most suitable for these processes, from plant layout to engineering costing. You'll design and implement an AI/Robotics system for automating processes common to industry. This gives you an appreciation of the significance of the flexibility provided by software and hardware solutions. Additionally, you'll develop and assess a robotic solution for the successful automation process, including specification, programming and cell design.
What you'll learn
Advance your programming expertise through an in-depth exploration of contemporary software engineering tools and methods. This module focuses on advanced object-oriented techniques, design patterns, and modern development methodologies. Used in professional practice. By emphasising transferable skills, teamwork, and industry-relevant workflows, the module prepares you to design, develop, and maintain complex software systems with confidence in real-world development environments.
Bring your learning together in a major client-led project. As the culmination of your course, this module challenges you to plan, research, design, build, test, and evaluate a substantial product or service to a professional standard. You'll develop independence, critical reflection, and self-evaluation skills while delivering a solution aligned to industry expectations.

Examine how to build cloud services and explore the technologies required to provide these to client-side systems. You'll study the established protocols that are used to communicate with server-side software and consider aspects such as security and n-tier systems.
Explore current standards, tools, and technologies used to engineer modern web applications. This module adopts a high-level, tool-based approach to design and development, enabling you to evaluate, select, and apply appropriate technologies for different contexts. You'll develop both practical and analytical skills to design, build, and assess robust internet applications that meet professional expectations, industry standards, and user needs.
Take a practical perspective on the domain of data and database development and management. You'll seek to justify and implement appropriate modelling, design and programming strategies that satisfy the requirements associated with a range of modern data/database applications.
This module introduces modern image and video processing techniques and their applications in embedded and intelligent systems. You'll explore key concepts in digital image and video processing and learn to apply techniques such as image filtering, de-nosing, enhancement, and restoration. Upon completion, you'll be able to critically apply tools and methods for extracting information from multimedia data, including surveillance imagery.
This module equips you with a solid understanding of mobile systems and the challenges for developing for resource-constrained devices. You'll investigate the architectures, platforms and development techniques used to create efficient, high-performing mobile applications. By the end of the module, you'll be able to approach complex software issues systematically with creativity and precision, demonstrating originality and systematic problem-solving in your solutions.
Study advanced concepts in networking technologies including quality of service in converged Networks. You'll study concepts of software defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NVF).
What you'll learn
Enhance your understanding of the tools and techniques used by modern network managers. You'll learn to collect management data, look for faults on the network and identify diagnostic procedures that are on par with industry standards.
The module will focus on the principles and the techniques in developing systems for 'Internet of Things'. You'll understand the application of intelligent systems in everyday life and how to automate complex scenarios. You'll look at prototyping smart systems and the tools and techniques used to develop them for a connected world. We'll explore how to program automation features in devices such as wearable technologies, and home-automation technologies. You'll develop a critical understanding of the components and principles that form an IoT system and how to critically analyse a problem, build a prototype and deploy a smart system using appropriate tools and techniques.
Develop an awareness of the methods and skills required to carry out master's-level research successfully. You'll reflect critically on your own development in the context of your chosen programme of study. Your final product or dissertation must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of your field of study and a critical awareness of issues at the forefront of our discipline. It should build on your existing skillset and demonstrate a degree of originality in the application of your knowledge.
This module provides the opportunity to undertake independent research or advanced scholarship in a subject area aligned with your award and personal academic interests. You'll design and complete an in-depth research project, culminating in a formal dissertation. Through critical enquiry and systematic analysis, you'll develop well-reasoned conclusions grounded in evidence, address clearly defined research questions, and situate your findings within existing academic and professional knowledge. On completion, you'll demonstrate an informed understanding of the legal, social, ethical, and professional considerations to your field, including their application within appropriate codes of professional practice.
Option modules may include
Learn about fundamental principles and approaches to intelligent systems, autonomous behaviour, sensing and control. You'll use practical examples of simulated robotic systems, open-source robot/A.I. systems and software to drive your learning. You'll also be expected to develop or modify software for simulating simple behavioural and reaction patterns of robotic and other intelligent agents/systems using tools such as ROS, MATLAB, and Simulink.
Develop your theoretical and practical understanding of microservices, a state-of-the-art paradigm in service computing. You'll learn to engineer software as units of services and gain familiarity with methods and concepts used ubiquitously in the industry. Demand for skills to manage complexity in software engineering is growing rapidly. This module will give you theoretical comprehension of microservices, dependency management, dependency injection, REST, SOAP, unit, integration and functional testing. You'll also gain practical experience using Spring, Hibernate, Maven/Gradle, Junit, Spock and Mockito. This is a practice-oriented module with a strong software development focus.
Study the techniques and technologies used in low-level systems and embedded programming. This module investigates various approaches to designing and programming modern-day computer systems at an intricate level. You'll be introduced to fundamental hardware concepts alongside the development languages, tools, and techniques used in lower-level software implementations. Topics include assembly-level programming, arithmetic logic unit (ALU) operations, branch and memory-based instructions, common logic gates (e.g. adder, subtracter, comparator), and computer organisation. You'll also examine code generation – from high-level languages to assembly and machine code – and gain an understanding of the Application Binary Interface (ABI). Upon completion, you'll have a solid foundation in the core principles that underpin software execution and systems design at the hardware interface.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘placement’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree and will extend the length of your course by an additional year.
Students who choose the placement route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

Kiran is the Director of Partnerships and Global Engagement in the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing. In this role, Kiran leads the development and delivery of the School’s global engagement strategy across international partnerships, transnational education (TNE), recruitment collaboration, and industry-connected initiatives that enhance student opportunity and outcomes.
