People, Power and Communities

(20 credits at L7)

This module focuses on the potential of people and communities to influence their own health and explores the implication of this for health promotion practice.  You will critically consider a range of key concepts through the exploration of community case studies.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

• Critique power and collective empowerment in relation to communities and social change
• Analyse the values and principles of community participation and community development in practice
• Critically assess the relevance of key concepts such as social capital and lay perspectives to understandings of health and community health promotion, and;
• Critically assess the wider social political and economic context of community health, nationally and globally.
