This module focuses on the potential of people and communities to influence their own health and explores the implication of this for health promotion practice. You will critically consider a range of key concepts through the exploration of community case studies.
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Critique power and collective empowerment in relation to communities and social change
- Analyse the values and principles of community participation and community development in practice
- Critically assess the relevance of key concepts such as social capital and lay perspectives to understandings of health and community health promotion, and;
- Critically assess the wider social political and economic context of community health, nationally and globally.

People, Power and Communities is aimed at professionals working in related allied-health professions fields as well as, for example, nursing, nutrition, policy, environmental health, and social work.
The module is delivered over 12 weeks in Semester 1 (September to January) either in person (two hours per week) or online via distance learning.
Assessment is by an academic poster supported by a 2000-word critical commentary OR a 20 minute presentation with critical commentary.
The cost for this module is £1,000.
