We will help you to be innovative and forward thinking, to manage complex businesses effectively and to develop these businesses by thinking strategically.
As part of your course, you’ll:
- Develop your project management skills devising, developing and successfully implementing an array of hospitality events guided by industry
- Put theory into practice and see hospitality in action, with visits to local industry
- Work on live projects, such as devising social media communication plans for restaurateurs, designing and developing an exceptional guest welcome or creating a strategy for hoteliers and bars based on data and market insights on the latest trends in the sector
There is an opportunity to negotiate your own assessments, tailor the course to your own interests and goals, and undertake on-going training throughout your course in specific industry interests and qualifications.
If you choose to study our sandwich option – a year of paid employment in industry – you’ll spend your third year working in the hospitality industry, gaining the practical skills you need to be a successful leader in the sector. Our placement students have worked at companies both at home and abroad including the Radisson Blu here in Leeds and La Gorce Country Club in Miami.

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. What you'll learn
Learn to create and deliver successful hospitality marketing initiatives as well as irresistible, memorable and communicable hospitality products and services in ethical and responsible ways so that stakeholders achieve their short-term goals and long-term purposes.
This module looks at profitability and will introduce you to the key financial documents used by hospitality businesses. You'll gain an understanding of how a department or unit can operate efficiently and effectively whilst maintaining product quality.
Develop an understanding of how best to design the structure and culture of departments in a variety of hospitality organisations in order to coordinate employees' behaviours to ensure the efficient and effective day to day operation of the unit. To do this, you will develop an understanding of the labour markets and the composition of the labour force in the hospitality industry.
This module will provide the opportunity to acquire and develop academic and professional skills in both your learning, paid and un-paid work environments to help you to succeed.
Explore how you can identify target customers, understand their needs and develop products and service offers which meet them. It will then go beyond this to ensure that you are able to plan products and services which exceed customers' requirements and genuinely delight them, rather than simply satisfy their needs. You will consider and apply key concepts including the marketplace; market segmentation, positioning and targeting and consumer behaviour to hospitality businesses.
Explore the meaning of hospitality and how the hospitality industry has evolved from hosting guests to becoming businesses which provide food, drink and accommodation, offering personalised service, interconnected cultural experiences and infotainment in a socially responsible sustainable manner.
What you'll learn
Develop an understanding of research methods within the context of hospitality management. You will be introduced to philosophical principles before developing a research project. Module content will include research processes, project management and time management.
You will examine the concepts of service operations and quality management, enabling you to evaluate their contribution and influence on both traditional and contemporary issues influencing consumers’ hospitality experiences.
Examine a range of theories to create a pragmatic, contingency, process model of management and leadership that can be used to take the hospitality business unit forward dealing with individuals and groups across a variety of departments and situations. You will develop a rigorous and relevant management and leadership model that can be continually developed throughout your career based on ongoing academic research and personal career experiences which can be used to drive the development of the business unit.
This module will address the many ways that communication is possible in the hospitality industry today – both theoretically and practically. You will have the opportunity to explore effective communication strategies and tactics to influence consumers to engage with hospitality businesses and share their experiences with the hospitality business and other consumers.
Study the recruitment, selection, training and development of human resources in the hospitality industry and be able to decide which methods are appropriate for the effective and responsible management of labour.
Develop financial decision making from the perspective of sustainability, corporate social responsibility and the triple bottom line. You will look at how you can use your financial resources to make decisions to sustain a hospitality business and ensure it is managed responsibly over both the short and long term. You will learn how to develop and use decision models and build financial scenarios to make informed decisions and to measure the balance of environmental, social and financial performance.
What you'll learn
Undertake a consultancy project related to specific issues facing the tourism and hospitality industries. Working as part of a small team, you'll use problem-solving methods and project management techniques to address a brief which will be set by external industry clients. You'll be able to adopt innovative approaches to finding solutions to real industry challenges. The module will develop and assess your skills, knowledge and professionalism as you management and realise the project. You'll also develop key professional networking skills through opportunities with the industry.
Gain an understanding of the nature and importance of entrepreneurialism within the hospitality industry and learn to identify and evaluate the requirements of successful business development. You will critically reflect on your own interest and capability for business development and will be able to develop effective business plans for new business ideas.
Understand the importance of strategically managing the hospitality industry, and its associated stakeholders, by creating and presenting food and drink places and spaces. This module will introduce the hospitality industry’s role in strategically creating food and drink value for places and spaces; be they countries such a France, Mexico or Thailand, or regions such as the Champagne Region, and cities from London to New Orleans or Marrakesh. You'll then explore the management, marketing and imagery of food and drink places and spaces. The final part of this module will review the sensory experiences and pleasures that consumers seek from the food and drink in specific places and spaces.
Create and develop a competitive strategy that can produce a level of performance that generates enough competitive advantage for a hospitality business to survive and prosper.
This module will enable students to critically evaluate socially responsible hospitality businesses to gain knowledge in how they engage and grow; with social responsibilities at the heart of business culture. Students will also be asked to critically review why and how businesses consciously develop their engagement in social responsible strategies for the ultimate benefit of their stakeholders.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.
Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.
