Mental health nurses stand alongside people at some of the most vulnerable, complex, and challenging moments of their lives. On this BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing degree, you’ll gain the knowledge, practical expertise, and confidence to become a registered mental health nurse who leads with compassion and clinical excellence.

Hands-on opportunities

Selection Criteria
We will evaluate your personal statement in relation to your research into the profession of mental health nursing. You should include details of any experience you have of engaging with vulnerable people with mental health needs or working within mental health settings, how you have gained insight into the course (e.g. open days, reading through materials on course webpages or speaking to nurses), your personal qualities which you feel are related to mental health nursing, including what motivates you to choose nursing as a career.
You must also be able to demonstrate how you meet the NMC Key Competencies through the application process and provide examples of how you meet the basic skills required for nursing in numeracy, communications, physicality, relationships and IT skills within your personal statement.
DBS Check
Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
Self Declaration Check
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. For some countries, an individual can only apply in person and so it is preferable for those applicants still resident in the relevant country, to apply before entering the UK.Health Check

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. What you'll learn
Develop the academic skills for learning, and the professional ethical and legal principles that underpin accountable, evidence based professional practice. You'll begin to define and develop the skills involved in addressing the literacy and technological knowledge and skills required to underpin academic learning. You'll also understand how the professional standards as outlined in the Code (NMC, 2018) and the legal and regulatory frameworks in England, impact on professional nursing practice. This module will also explore your obligations as a nursing student in practice as a proactive and engaged learner.
Study the fundamental principles of basic nursing skills, normal anatomy and physiology of key body systems. The knowledge you develop will enable you to practise safe and effective care, underpinned by the theory and science of contemporary clinical nursing practice. You'll begin to define and develop the skills involved in addressing the literacy, technological knowledge and skills are required to underpin the fundamentals of nursing science and practice. You'll also understand how to use your core skills and knowledge of communication to engage with patients and services users to deliver safe and effective care. You'll learn how to address the whole person’s care where mental ill health and physical ill health coexist. This module will also explore your obligations as a student in practice. You'll study how to safely administrate medicines to support key body systems whilst understanding the pathophysiological basis and clinical presentations.
Start to explore the foundational principles of health and the promotion of wellbeing. This module will enable you to conceptualize health and how this is influenced by the socio-economic and cultural contexts in which people live. You'll search population data, read health promotion literature and explore contemporary accounts of health, ill health, and health and social care. This module will give you key insights into the nature of health and the nursing role in assessing health and promoting wellbeing and recovery.
This module will support the practice learning experiences which are an essential part of the course. You'll be required to meet the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC 2018) proficiencies by actively engaging in practice learning.
What you'll learn
Continue your journey as an independent learner. You'll further develop academic and professional skills to meet the challenges of both undergraduate study and professional practice. The module content focuses on three learning streams: evidence-based practice, law and ethical practice, and supporting, supervising and role modelling in practice.
This module will enable you to apply your knowledge of nursing science. You'll build on the concepts developed in year one to practise more independently and deliver safe and effective care with greater confidence.
Explore nursing in partnership with people to promote health and well-being, offer health protection and prevent ill health. You'll build your confidence in having health-based conversations with people and their families. You'll also consider how the social setting affects patient choice.

What you'll learn
You'll apply nursing science as you build on the concepts developed in years one and two. You'll be able to practise more independently and deliver safe and effective care with increasing confidence.
Learn to play a key role in improving and maintaining the physical, mental and behavioural health and wellbeing of people and families living with long term conditions. You'll examine data and apply metrics to inform care planning and service provision decisions for people with complex health and social care needs. You'll consider the challenges faced in planning care that improves and maintains health in the context of national health care provision, the commoditisation of health, digital health and global trends in health and wellbeing. This module will also provide the opportunity for you to participate in professional dialogues on health and wellbeing. You'll communicate your ideas, your appraisal of the challenges and potential solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Consolidate your prior learning through the application of key professional and ethical knowledge and skills. You'll support the delivery of person-centred, safe and compassionate care as you transition to registration. This module will focus on three learning streams: the obligations to improve and enhance the safety and quality of nursing care, critical application of evidence base in health care practice, and being an accountable health professional.
This module will aim to build on the clinical, professional and transferable skills introduced in year two. It will support the practice learning experiences which are an essential part of the course. You may also be eligible for a Child Dependant’s Allowance and Exceptional Support Funding depending on your circumstances. Details of this NHS Learning Support Funding can be found on the NHS website. Adult Nursing and Mental Health Nursing placements are generally in NHS Trusts across Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East of England, but some experiences may be offered in private independent and voluntary organisations.
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and occupational health (OH) check. The cost of these checks is covered by your course fee, but you'll need to pay for your ID documents to be verified (£12.80 as of August 2025). Your DBS check is valid for the duration of your course. New checks are only required if you have a break in your studies outside of the normal holiday periods. If you misplace your certificate during your studies, you'll be charged £49.50 for a new certificate. A charge of £35 will be incurred per missed OH appointment.
- For online delivery off-campus, you'll need access to a personal digital device and headset to enable participation in digital and online learning, teaching and assessment (£250). Chromebooks are not compatible with some of our essential software.
- Footwear for practice/professional environment (£50).
- The cost of breakaway training will be covered in your course fees. You'll incur a charge of £75 per session that you do not attend.
- You'll be provided with a name badge and Smartcard. Smartcards enable healthcare professionals to access clinical information appropriate to their role. There will be a charge for lost Smartcards (£27) and a charge for lost placement name badges (£5).
Optional Costs
- Some ebooks are available for key texts but you may wish to buy some (£100).
- An initial set of uniforms will be covered by your course fee, but you may wish to purchase additional sets (£35 for a tunic and trousers).
- Additional vaccination programmes you choose to undertake with your own GP or health provider may be subject to charges and we won't be able to reimburse you.
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council once you have qualified (currently £120 per year).
- An optional self-sourced placement at home or abroad (costs will vary depending on location and experience).
- An optional festival placement and you'd need to cover the cost of a tent, camping equipment and sleeping bag (£100).
- Membership of a union, for example, the Royal College of Nurses (student membership is approx. £1 per month).
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

When you graduate, you'll be eligible to apply for NMC registration as a mental health nurse, opening the door to a dynamic and evolving profession. To support you on your journey into employment, you’ll take part in a simulated recruitment process, including mock interviews and tailored feedback from experienced tutors. You’ll also have access to our annual nursing recruitment fair, attended by a wide range of organisations, including the armed forces and the and the Royal College of Nursing.
